Mac Users - Crash Diagnosis
This is a tech issue, but not everyone checks that forum so hopefully the admins will let me keep this here.
For those unable to play 2142 since Saturday, the problem is down to the latest quicktime update 7.6. It is a system wide issue, affecting most if not all games apparently:

So, in short. If you haven't updated your machine yet, don't. If you have, I don't know what to recommend, as EA hardly have a reputation for helping people, especially mac users. I guess it's up to apple to release a quick fix. I'm going to see if i can revert to an older version of quicktime in the meantime. In Order to Dance

Thanks for the heads-up, Logical.
I'm not too tech-savvy, but from reading the link, this problem only affects 10.4 (Tiger) and not 10.5 (Leopard), right?

Re: Mac Users - Crash Diagnosis
LogicalHarm, thanks for tracking down that link to the Apple Support Forum. It's probably a good thing that it's affecting so many different games. Hopefully it means that Apple will resolve the problem posthaste.

Re: Mac Users - Crash Diagnosis
Following on from Draeh's points in the other thread regarding these crashes, this bug is apparently unrelated to Quicktime. BF2142 is perhaps one of the games that is not affected, and it seems that the quicktime issue is just a coincidence.
This isn't definitive, but I have tried single player and so on, as well as checking other forums, and it seems the quicktime issue has nothing to do with it.
Punkbuster must be the issue. If any mac owner has had any luck with manually updating PB using PBSetup, could they post here. I've never been able to work it.In Order to Dance

Re: Mac Users - Crash Diagnosis
I believe now that this is definitely a PB issue.
I was able to play on a non PB server without incidence.
Now I need to go take a shower for playing on a non PB server.

2142 still not working for me. I'm waiting for the next PB maintenance release, and if it doesn't work then, I'll try a full reinstall. After that, god only knows.

Re: Mac Users - Crash Diagnosis
Seems like you guys are right, Draeh and Logical. I wanted to test it for myself, so after some scrounging around I found a punkbusterless server, and sure enough, BF2142 worked fine. What's odd to me is that there is no indication of any client or server updates in 2009 on the Evenbalance site. So what changed on the weekend of the 23rd? Was it some kind of Y2K, unanticipated date configuration? Who knows. Here's hoping it'll get fixed some day, since manually updating PB has had no effect.

Mac user progress
Hey guys,
i recently reinstalled bf2142 and updated it with 1.4 patch. The game ran smoothly, but then i was kick from a server by PB (the culprit) . When i updated 1.4 to 1.5, it seemed that the problem was fixed, and i was able to play for about 5 mins instead of the usual 10 secs, until my game froze again( damn PB).
just thought i should share my progress“Diplomacy is the art of letting the other person have your way”

Re: Mac Users - Crash Diagnosis
Good news, guys. I was able to play for a couple hours today without any freezes. Hopefully that means whatever was wrong has been fixed. If you're still experiencing problems, I wonder if they're having to go through and fix player profiles in batches. Anyways... a mysterious problem, and mysteriously fixed.
