I hate to beat a dead horse, but...
I just bought my friend Mislead 2142 Deluxe Edition, she's got it all working fine (except activating northern strike.. don't get me started, but you suck EA), but shes having trouble getting the alt-tab crashing to stop. We've applied the patch thats supposed to fix that by replacing the dice.blk file.. but it hasn't helped. She is running windows vista x64. She's tried everything in this thread: http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlef...-solution.html
and I'm wondering if theres something she has missed?

Far as I know, there is no fix for the alt-tab bug. If you exit 3d mode into the server selection screen. You'll lessen your chances of the crash.

If you are running Vista 64 bit, then you definitely won't be able to recover from an Alt-tab once you enter a game. You will have to open task manager, kill BF2142 and start again!!!
If you load the game, but don't load a map, you sometimes can recover from Alt-tab.|TG| RoadWarrior

Something that can help from time to time is running your in-game screen resolution the same as your default Windows screen size. That seems to help, but there is no 'magic fix' as half the time I lock up the other half I recover. I seemed to be about 80%- 90% lock up when running a diffrent screen resolution.

Not true, I run Vistax64 and I have no problems alt-tabbing out of the game. I can't remember the last time my game crashed after alt-tabbing out. I can just alt-tab right back in, and everything is fine.
OP, try setting the game's resolution to the resolution of your monitor in Windows. Also, try replacing that DICE logo movie -- I definitely did that.
The OS is not the problem, I'm almost certain of it.Fight!

I can alt-tab in 64-bit Vista as well, though I do lock up roughly 50% of the time (it's why I get grumpy when people ask me to jockey them between TS channels).

Re: I hate to beat a dead horse, but...
I have the Deluxe version of 2142 that came out on DVD last year. My solution to Alt+Tab issue was to set the game to run in window mode, the game does not freeze when I Alt+Tab out of it, I can quickly switch in and out of the game and best of all when the game does freeze it does not affect my entire system. I can switch to Task Manager and kill the game process without having to resort to hard reset.
Oh, I did disable all the movies by renaming the folder containing the .bik files.
P.S. You do not have to activate the Northern Strike when you have the Deluxe version. The activation messages you get in game are leftover code from the time when 2142 and NS were separate installs, which is not the case in Deluxe 2142.
