New Ethernet card dont work
Any of you guys replaced their onboard MoBo ethernet port with another PCI ethernet adapter card before? I got wind that a PCI ethernet card would do wonders for online gaming and lag issues so I purchased one. Got an Intel Pro Desktop GT ethernet adapter from Tiger DIrect and installed but the card does not show up in the System Hardware configuration screen.
My MoBo is an ASUS M2N-SLI with onboard ethernet port but it says nothing about disabling it in the setup. So I'm wondering if I just wasted $36 on something I can not use.

Re: New Ethernet card dont work
did you install the drivers?
thats the only reason why (that I can think of) that it would not show in your device list
as for reducing ping in game I highly doubt that your investment will prove to be that beneficial but who knows.Reapator, overlord of ponies

Re: New Ethernet card dont work
Some motherboards' on-board Ethernet handling can be shaky at best. Though alot of boards have been improving greatly recently (especially on ethernet and audio).
I took at look at Intel's website, assuming this is the card you got, check out the support tab on the below URL and see if you can find anything there.

Re: New Ethernet card dont work
If you have your manual, you should find info on disabling onboard lan on page 4-27 under 4.4.5 Onboard configuration. Should be under the advanded tab in your bios.
I have a different MB, but I was able to install my ethernet card before I disabled the onboard lan. Have you tried taking the card the out and reinstalling it?

Re: New Ethernet card dont work
A couple of things to consider:
- do you have the latest BIOS for your mobo? I have found the bios shipped from the factory is typically old on ASUS boards. Here is the link to the ASUS site for your mobo:
http://support.asus.com/download/dow...&model=M2N-SLI
You can download a new bios and ASUS update from there.
- You may need to disable your onboard Ethernet device first. I would be very surprised if your mobo doesn't have it set somewhere. In my bios you have to go to:
Advanced->Onboard Device Configuration->Onboard LAN Device
Your system will not bind to an ethernet card which will allow your new PCI card to be recognized and search for drivers.|TG| RoadWarrior

Re: New Ethernet card dont work
You shouldn't need to disable anything to get a second NIC to work, in fact, if you do I would be highly surprised.
If the NIC doesn't show up in device manager (as either itself or as a mysterious new "Unknown Device"), return it and get another, most likely it's defective. Do you see it when the machine posts?

Re: New Ethernet card dont work
Since I only have two PCI card slots I switched the ethernet with my SoundBlaster card slot and the ethernet adapter showed right up. The software for hardware installation found the previous Intel driver software so it's good to go now. Spent a couple of hours with Spiff on the Tactical gamer server and seems to work ok. As to lag issues and wheather it makes my program work any better I could not tell. Program did freeze up while on the small Tunis map and I had to do a hot reboot to get back to the game. I suspec that others had same problems as ther were fewer players when I got back on.
Still have the issue of my SoundBlaster Fatality Pro card not being able to run under the SoundBlaster option in the Audio setup screen. I've only been able to get the finer sound qualities to run right just a few times. Most other times I hear the sound bytes glitching and repeating and program will fault out if I allow it to continue in the game. I suspect maybe a faulty memory area on the soundblaster card. SO for now I'm running in only the Hardware mode.
