    "Hard Crash" Restart Workaround

    Hey All,

I know almost (if not all) of us have had the game "hard lock" on us at some point in time. Whether this was during game play, or when clicking the join game button. This lock up prevents you from getting back to the desktop in any way (i.e. [WinKey] + [L], or [WinKey] + [D]), and always requires a reboot. You must admit it is a big waste of time, and a let down, especially when you are loading your favorite map.

Well, I have found a way to show the Windows Task Manager when you could not normally get it to come up during this situation. This saves you from having to completely reboot your system, and saves valuable time when trying to rejoin the server quickly.

    THE WORKAROUND:

When your game "hard locks" do the following.

Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Delete] like you normally would to call up the Task Manager.

Press [Alt] then [U] then [S] (in that order)
--[Alt] activates the menu bar and lets Windows know you want to use the shortcuts
--[U] navigates to the Shut Down menu on the menubar
--[S] selects the Switch User menu item

This will return you to the windows login screen.

Your Task Manager window should now be visible or partially visible in the lower right of your screen. You should now be able to regain mouse input, or use keyboard navigation to end the process.

This should save you some time and frustration, and allow you to get back to playing faster.

DISCLAIMER: This has only been tested using Windows XP, I am unsure of the proper keys, or if this works with Vista. If it does, or someone has the correct keys for Vista, I would love a reply with that information.

Hope this helps some of you!

Odd that I've never had an issue with the hard lock and Vista. I suppose Vista brings up this when you press ctrl alt del, allowing you to access the task manager. Generally when I do it this way, 2142 automatically closes when the task manager opens. [Vista x64 ultimate]

I'll try this in Vista, and get back to you.

I just memorized the key combination that you need to close the BF2142.exe process even when you can't see the window. Basically goes like this when you get a lock:

    1. Bring up task manager - you won't see it but if you pressed it right its there
    2. Hit B (task manager will select the first process starting with a B)
    3. Hit TAB twice (this gets you so your over the 'End Process' button)
    4. Hit E (to End the process)
    5. Hit Y (to confirm with a Yes to ending the process)

    Requirements:

    - Don't have any other processes that start with a B or you may close something unintended or have to add a lot more steps to close both.
    - Before starting 2142 always make sure the task manager is on the processes tab and then close it.(task manager remembers the last tab you were on)

I use the very same method Mantis!!!

Also after step 4 of The Mantis Method you will hear a beep as the PC asks you to confirm the process end.
If you don't hear a beep something has gone wrong.

same here, in xp I would lock up and have to reboot. I don't think I have experienced that with vista yet.

I got around it by running the game in a window. It seems that the OS can deal better with the window.

You can do the same in XP by doing
    1. Press Ctr Alt Del
    2. Hit "B" (Brings upf 2142
    3. Hit "Del" (Brings up "end process")
    4. Hit "Enter" (Clicks "end process")
    5. Hit "Enter" (Confirms the end of process)

I don't believe Vista crashes when a game has an error. I have always been able to ctrl+alt+del and exit the game. So far no program having an error has completely locked my computer like in XP and I've had Vista for about a year now.

If you have a programmable button available on your keyboard you can have it run the kill_BF2142.bat script found here:

    http://www.tacticalgamer.com/battlef...42-script.html

I use this all the time, it works perfectly. Press the button and a second later you're back to desktop. Basically it does the exact same thing that everyone's mentioning above, but it looks for "BF2142.exe" instead of "B*", so that you know you're getting the right executable.

    Re: "Hard Crash" Restart Workaround

I just re-read the post by Mantis and it'is similar but not exactly the same method as mine. I suppose everyone uses their own method.....

    1. Press Ctrl Alt Del
    2. Hit "B" (Brings upf 2142
    3. Hit Alt E "end process"
    4. Hit "Enter" (Confirms the end of process)

So Press Ctrl Alt Del, B, Alt E, Enter

    Done!!

Another thing that should be mentioned, restarting you client after a crash can prevent hard locks!

Very true! And, I have started doing this on a consistent basis. Always restart after a crash!
