    Dual Monitor Crash on Load

Ok so I recently purchased a new monitor and am running a dual monitor system using DualView.

One monitor is a 24" 1920x1200 LCD, the other is a 22" 1680x1050 LCD. Graphics card is NVIDIA 8800 GTS.

When I run BF2142 on the 24", the screen goes black and immediately crashes to desktop, no error message or anything. Sequence of events:
Click shortcut -> Splash screen pops up -> CD whirs -> Splash screen goes away -> Screen goes black (as if loading the intro movies) -> Crashes back to desktop as if I've never opened the game.

    My shortcut says:

    "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200

I've tried using both +fullscreen 1 and +widescreen 1 with no luck. My primary monitor is the 1920x1200 monitor. Graphics drivers are up-to-date (already tried that).

I know my computer specs are more than able to run BF2142 since this is the same comp I've been using for the game for years. The only thing different between now and the last time BF2142 worked successfully is a new keyboard and new monitor. I doubt that the keyboard is causing the problem, but this is windows we're talking about....

Trouble shooting steps I've already tried:
    - Rebooting.
    - Update Drivers.
    - Switch from Dual View to Single View (still doesn't work)
    - Removing the +szx and +szy options.
    - TG forum search.
    - Google search.

    Any ideas? =(

Re: Dual Monitor Crash on Load

I'm not 100% but I don't think 2142 can support 1920 by 1200 resolution. At least with my system it maxes at at the 1680x1050, even with my ATI 4870 that can crank out a lot more. Then again, could just be my monitor...

First thing to check would be make sure you monitor is running at 60hrtz or more. 59hrtz equals crash on load just like you described.

If it is already running at 60+ I would try adding "+widescreen 1 +szx 1680 +szy 1050" and see if the smaller res does anything.

As a last resort, (well before complete reinstall) try removing the "+szx +szy" stuff and deleting the "Profiles" folder in the "Battlefield 2142" folder in your my documents. This should clear out any user setting you have in place and force the game to open in default settings. You will need to rebuild any key setting and graphic options, but it has worked for me before.

    Best of luck.

Change +fullscreen to +widescreen and remove the szx and szy, then choose a support resolution in the options menu.

I'm at work at the moment, but I did try that *points at the list of things tried* and it didn't work. Refresh rate is 60Hz though, that is something I checked but forgot to mention. I'll try deleting the profile when I get home and restoring default settings.

Got the game running. Deleting the Profiles folder did the trick.

At first I had a problem with the mouse not staying on the monitor, but according to Y on teamspeak this is normal behavior while in the ESC menu. Once you click Join Game the mouse locked into the game. One thing to note, clicking anywhere on the other monitor minimized BF2142, not that it's a huge deal but it just means that if I'm going to reset the teamspeak window so i can see who's talking i gotta change channels and back again. I know on ventrilo this would cause many to get a "User has joined the channel" messages. If this happens on Teamspeak, then I'll just leave the window minimized and shut off the other monitor when playing.

Thanks for the tips guys, you'll be seeing me back on the battlefield soon. Oh, and just a heads up, 1920x1200 resolution battlefield looks amazing.

Re: Dual Monitor Crash on Load

If you have a big enough monitor, sounds like you do, you could run 2142 windowed, then while the map is loading or you're in the options menu, you can move the mouse to other apps and interact with them without having 2142 minimize and lock. This won't work during the load movies though, they will pause and wait for 2142 to become the active window before resuming.

Windowed mode... You know I remember messing with that awhile back, thought to myself "this is really useful" then completely forgetting to actually use that shortcut I made for it.

If I remember right, it's +windowed 1 for it? I might try that.

For the teamspeak thing, I guess that would really be my only option, since apparently there's no way to just leave channels minimized.

no, you want to turn off fullscreen, which gives you windowed mode. So you'd change "+fullscreen 1" to "+fullscreen 0". I'd leave +widescreen 1 in there too
