Question Custom (Widescreen) Resolution + Alternative Tweaks

    Hello,

I'm new here and sorry to drop in with these questions on the first post.
But I really need to get this game's performance straightened out a bit.

I have quite an old computer by now, it's only júst acceptable... ish...
But since I recently got a widescreen-monitor, and its native resolution is 1680x1050 which is quite "next-gen" for this system, I wanted to try a lower resolution.
Now I got it to work at the native resolution, but when I try another (lower) 16:10-resolution, like 1280x800, it will just not start.

Why does it fail to do this?
Does the game just not support the resolution or is there a different issue?

It's just too bad, or quite sad I should say, they can't just add new resolutions to the game's menus and such things.
I mean, even other older games have had updates for years later that you could just access in the menus.
It seems like the engine of this game is just really stiff and locked up...

Anyway, as I said, my system is quite old and mainly the processor is holding everything up.
But could you tell me any tweaks that could improve the performance of this game on this system?
And I really mean to just smooth things out, it just needs a little more.

I know the TweakGuide from years ago and I guess the creator of that covered pretty much everything inside-out already.
But who knows, there might be something similar to "RSV"s "legal tweaks"?
Then again, I'm afraid the game would complain about changes again anyway. :P
I also overclocked the system as much as possible, it doesn't help to clock up the GPU more as the CPU holds it up anyway.
Then I also used RivaTuner to smooth things out a bit.
And yeah... that's all I can come up with.

    Greetings,

Re: Custom (Widescreen) Resolution + Alternative Tweaks

In your 2142 shortcut there is the "target" line to adjust your resolution use this (it should all be that same just the "+fullscreen 1 +szx +szy" part is added on).

    "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1440 +szy 900

You can replace the 1440 and 900 with any numbers you want and it should work just fine.

The TweakGuide is pretty much it and should give you everything you need to know. Also make sure that your system (especially your GPU) is not overheating, that could cause crashes.

If you are having more issues after that you can post again.

Re: Custom (Widescreen) Resolution + Alternative Tweaks

Well yeah, that's what I used.
There is also no other way to get 1680x1050 as it's not in the 'Video'-menu's resolutions-list.
Maybe the problem is that I added '+widescreen1' with the 1280x800-resolution?
It works in combination with 1680x1050 and I believe not even without.
But maybe it's an issue for 1280x800, so I'll try that again... without '+widescreen1' that is.

Nope, it doesn't fall for it... :\

Re: Custom (Widescreen) Resolution + Alternative Tweaks

I use only "+widescreen 1" and no "+szx 1680 +szy 1050" in the shortcut. When i get into the video options of the game i can then choose "1680x1050" as a valid resolution.

Before that i used the "+szx 1680 +szy 1050" in the shortcut without the "+widescreen 1" and that also worked.

1280x800 shouldn't be a problem, I run that resolution on my laptop without a hitch.

I'll have to try that, because I never found any additional resolutions.
Except that the list of resolutions changes when switching monitors.
First it was all like this and that at 85Hz etc. Now it's all 60-75Hz with an LCD, and some different resolutions too.

The highest currently shown is 1280x9-something though.
Which is unfortunately just over the 800 I need vertically.
I think that one is probably a 16:9-resolution as the 3D-graphics are stretched horizontally.
And then probably the HUD stretched extra, worse than in 16:10-resolutions I mean.

Before that i used the "+szx 1680 +szy 1050" in the shortcut without the "+widescreen 1" and that also worked.
Hm, I think it will just not fall for the resolution-command without adding the widescreen-command.
I'm not 100% sure as I've tried so many different ways, but I think it didn't work some time ago.

    Aha, I didn't know that.
I knew that the command-line was picky about spaces,
but I'd have thought one of those two ways (with or without space) would simply have been wrong.

I'd think so too, it just fails to do so here...

I'll first have to try the widescreen-command WITH the space and see if
If not, I'll have to add a resolution manually too, including the widescreen-command with the space.

I see it doesn't officially support 1280x800 though...
But I also tried the 1440x900, which is supported, but doesn't work either.
    I'll try both again.

    Thanks all for your posts.
I'll see what happens right now.

    Edit:

    OK, this is odd...
I've tried all ways I can think of now.
The way of adding '+widescreen 1' ónly works; there are more resolutions in the game's menu itself.
Like 1680x1050, which like the manual way works too, except 1280x800 and 1440x900 are nowhere to be found.
So I tried adding those to the target-line in the shortcut, both before and after the "widescreen", which it just refuses to launch with.

Could it be possible my monitor itself doesn't support them?
Would be weird actually, to leave out some of the 16:10-resolutions while it is able to use 4:3- and 16:9-resolutions...

Re: Custom (Widescreen) Resolution + Alternative Tweaks

1280x800 is the native for my laptop so it could be the issue if your monitor doesn't support it. Most monitors should support 1024x768 as the lowest resolution. This may seem weird but try 1280x800 in the command line with "fullscreen 1" instead of "widescreen 1". When I first started using the target commands I actually used the fullscreen command with the custom resolution and it worked fine, after I did a format of my comp and reinstalled it stopped working, crashing the exe before the game launched. So I switched to widescreen and it worked. It should look like this then.
    +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 800
    or
    +widescreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 800
just to clarify how it should look in your target line. It looks like the game is just being fussy, other wise you would be having different problems if it was you monitor that was at fault.
