I finally read the guide and took some action. I lowered most of my settings to medium as recommended and it seems to have gotten rid of most of my "lag"! Interestingly enough I still have my resoultion to 1600/1200 and with the settings at medium the game still looks as if I had them on high!

yea you really cant tell the difference between high and medium on most of the settings.

I was always wondering about the geometry option in the video settings, and through this guide I finally figured out that it was basically for rendering vehicles at a longer range, which is very useful, and something I've been looking for for a while now!
((Insert slightly witty, yet incredibly common-sensical quote here, to possibly ellicit a comment in one of thousands of posts on a rather popular web forum.))
