2142 and EA Downloader
I've noticed that 2142 starts up EAD automatically when it launces. Is this only relevant to the EAD version of the game? And also, if I uninstall EAD, will I be unable to play? Does EAD running in the background replace the "must have DVD in drive" bit?

Re: 2142 and EA Downloader
I've noticed this too after buying it from EAD. I've closed EAD but if I start up 2142, EAD starts up. I just don't bother anymore. Although, I didn't notice this occuring with BF2. I bought the store copy of BF2 and the expansions over EAD.

Re: 2142 and EA Downloader
I assume that this does mean that it likely does the same thing that the DVD in the drive does. As well as the fact that it has to be able link the game to one specific account.

Thanks Phoenixx. Maybe I should have read the readme.

Re: 2142 and EA Downloader
I shutdown EA downloader between the time I launch the game and the time something actually happens. It hasn't caused me any trouble so far. The EULA for the downloader seems more malevolent than that for the actual game, so I figure if its not running maybe they are not getting as much info from me (but what do I know).

Re: 2142 and EA Downloader
It does use EA Link to check your authentication... as those with EA Link noticed they got invalid cd key messages when the service was down.
There is a FAQ in the support section on EA Link that steps you through a regedit that should bypass EA Link Authentication.... I didn't test it last night with EA Link uninstalled, but I was able to play when EA Link was down so perhaps that method woud allow you to remove the program completely.|TG-12th| SHINER

Re: 2142 and EA Downloader
Uh, yea I stopped this from happening the first time I ran the game.
The shortcut calls something like launcher.exe or some crap. It doesn't call the actual game executable. Just swap it to call the actual game executable and it doesn't load the downloader first. God knows what else that launcher is calling.
I've had no problems playing the downloaded version like this since the first day I got it.

Re: 2142 and EA Downloader
why is it so seriously difficult to play this friggin game?
so I figured I'd give it another try after previously being unable to play for more than 180seconds :/
now, I can't seem to play because the patch won't apply correctly? I logged in and it says a patch was available.. so I DL'ed in via downloader. Installed it. Relaunched the game and the same message popped up saying a patch is available. o_0 wtf.
So I tried DL'ing the patch from the TG space and running that .exe... no luck.
I've searched but didn't see anything about this - anyone?
<sigh> back to bf2
