My frame rate sucks
Ok it doesn't, but I have higher standards than most. My computer destroys BF2, but when the player count increases in this game, the frame rate falls linearly.
It doesn't seem to matter whats on my screen either, its all about how many people are in the server. With < 15 it runs buttery smooth 60+ FPS. With 48 on Titan it drops to 20-30. It sucks.
I believe it has to do with all of the icons that are being drawn on the HUD. Turning down my graphics options doesn't seem to improve frame rate at all, it's really weird.
This is forcing me to upgrade a few months earlier than I wanted to, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone else is having similar frame rate issues.

Re: My frame rate sucks
No, its not Titan lag. It's my CPU bottlenecking, I'm sure.
Conquest does the same thing with a similar amount of players.
It makes me sad. I don't want to have to reinstall XP only to format and reinstall Vista in 3 months. Oh well.

Re: My frame rate sucks
I'm using a 7900GT at 1280x1024 with everything on high. I usually get 70 FPS and never notice any slowdowns. I am using a Core 2 Duo though. I've seen comments that people are getting bad FPS despite decent video cards. I think it really gets heavy on the CPU when lots of objects are present.
I think the Alt key cycles icons. It may just hide the control point icons though.

Re: My frame rate sucks
Without your system specs it is hard to say.
I have a C2D e6600 @ 3GHz (333/999) with 2GB 8500 RAM, x1900xtx 512, 2 Raptor HD (one for OS, one for gaming) and X-Fi sound. I haven't measured my FPS, because I've had no need to, but I run at 1280 x 1024 with everything on HIGH and 4x AA and 8x AF. I have no issues except on a Titan. Even then, it isn't so bad. just a jitter here and there. But some servers are just horrible. It'll lag no matter what.
You may be experiencing studdering. How much RAM do you have? What type of sound card do you use and what do you have your audio settings in BF set to?
One way you can test to see if it is your CPU is to turn off sound in BF2142. Add to the end of your BF2142 launch icon +nosound. Especially if you use on board sound, this will free up a lot of CPU resource. You could also try overclocking your CPU/FSB if you haven't.Telorn

Re: My frame rate sucks
2142 was supposed to be optimized so that it would run better than bf2. not the case imo. i have a moderate system (p4 2.8ht - 1 gb ram - x800xt - on board sound) and i hover around 20 - 30 frames on medium (doesnt seem to matter if i decrease any of the setting at that point, same fps). however when i run poe2 i get 40 - 60 frames on high lighting and medium textures and 40 - 50 on bf2. is it the processor thats bottlenecking my performance?

Re: My frame rate sucks
CPU and on-board sound. THe sound is just making all the worse for your CPU, because it's sucking up 10-20% of your CPU just to process sound.

Re: My frame rate sucks
I don't know about external. I'm sure the USB interface requires more CPU than PCI, but does it make a difference? You're best bet is to hit review sites and look at their benchmarks.
I don't think it can be any ol' cheap sound card. A) you'd have crapier sound than you already have and B) I don't think they have an on-board sound processor and so they'd use your CPU just the same.
Sound Blaster is obviously the best choice. Audigy or X-Fi, although if you're spending the money you might as well get the X-Fi XtremeMusic. You can find good deals on them. At CompUSA 2 weeks back it was on sale for $100 (20 instant rebate) with a $40 MIR for a total of $60.
Here's a review that ran benchmarks. of on-board sound to X-Fi Fatal1ty. The Fatal1ty has no performance increase over the basic XtremeMusic, as of yet, anyway. No game supports the on-board 64MB RAM yet.
But, even though you do get a performance increase, keep in my that your sound is also improving drastically! BF2 sounds like a whole new game on an X-Fi card, especially if you game regularly on headphones, as the X-Fi can give you a true surround environment.Last edited by Telorn; 10-27-2006 at 09:57 AM.
