Yes, it is almost definitely this, I just tried it, even ambient sounds pick up a tiny bit, you probably just got your mic off.

By the way, loads of great advice here, I think it's every possible thing you can do to make your voice loud in 2142.

Exclamation Re: How the heck can I make my mic louder for VOIP?

I'm having a similar problem, my mic does not respond to the bar in BF2142voicesetup, and people constantly complain that my mic is very low in game. The mic boost box (in BF2142 audio settings) becomes unchecked every time I check it, no matter what I do. Even if I go to Audio options, check it, go to any other options screen and come back to audio options, it's unchecked, though any other changes I make have stayed. I know my mic is unmuted (I can record and playback sound from the windows voice recorder thing).

I use a headset, so it's not that, and all the volume settings for the mic on my computer are set (I went through and did everything recommended in this thread, still very quiet in game). The only thing I can't do is mic boost, as that won't work. Sounds like it's happening to more people than just me, though, which is good!

But, once again, same problems, mic definitely not muted, neither on the computer or on the little volume doo-dad.

Re: How the heck can I make my mic louder for VOIP?

By any chance is this a headset that uses a USB connection? I ask because I recently bought a plantronics headset that also came with a USB adapter. When using the USB adapter, I have the exact same problems DaBrit is describing. When I reconnect the headset to the on-board audio of my mobo, I get back the "gain" option, and it works correctly.

No it does not have a USB adaptor. I had one of those, but it broke after I had it for a day and cost $80. So I didn't buy another one.

Hello to all,

Could you please post your sound card brand & model.

There are issues with "Mic Boost", if any of you have an embeded Realtek HD sound card.

For all cards, go to the Windows audio panel:

1. Playback controls -> mute your mic
2. Recording controls -> set Windows recording level ("stereo mix" on some cards) at 3/4
3. Recording controls -> set mic recording level at 2/4
4. Recording controls -> select advanced -> set on mic boost
5. Use Windows sound recorder to test your mic sound level
6. Adjust on recording controls, the mic recording level, if mic sound volume is low or high

You don't have to check anything on BF2142 audio setup exept the use VOIP check box.

BF2142 uses the Windows DirectSound (DX) API.

You have this odd issue because, as I mentioned above, BF2142 uses Windows API's for sound.
You set it fine there, but if you audio driver does not have "mic boost" support or have problems, BF2142 just ignores it.
If you could manage to set "mic boost" on Windows, you will see magical that the BF2142 mic boost will become checked !

So its all up to Windows. Don't blame DICE...

Regards.

Re: How the heck can I make my mic louder for VOIP?

I do indeed use a RealtekHD embedded sound card, so I guess that must be the issue. I cannot get to advanced controls, as it is greyed out:

I tried linking to a screenshot, but I'm not allowed to yet, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

Hello again,

For all of you that have RealTek HD sound cards:

1. Download from RealTek the latest driver:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false
2. Install
3. Reboot
4. The RealTek HD icon appears at the right notification area, on the taskbar
5. Double click it
6. Go to the mixer tab
7. There are two panels, Playback and Record
8. On the lower right side of the Playback panel, use the arrows to scroll and see more sound channels
9. Some input channels like Rear Pink In (where your mic is plugged in), have an extra button next to the standard mute button
10. Use button

Magic !!!

It is a Realtek ALC883 8-channel HD audio CODEC.

Some mainboards may require a BIOS change on audio settings, for enabling HD audio (AC'97 or HD).

Also in some WXP systems, a Microsoft HD audio driver is required to be installed before the RealTek driver installation.

Re: How the heck can I make my mic louder for VOIP?

I rolled back the driver using the button in Device Manager, and rebooted, and still don't have any sound. I guess this has become more serious than I originally thought :\

Re: How the heck can I make my mic louder for VOIP?

Just to update (since I made this thread almost a year ago), I'm now playing on a MacBook Pro with Windows Vista. I think that Vista made setting up my mic a lot easier. It was set pretty low, but it was very easy to bump it way up.

I'm using the on-board mic on the computer, which is over a foot from my mouth, and I only get complaints from my squad if I'm deliberately speaking low.

I'm glad to see that this thread has been useful for some folks.
