OK, let me get my brain in gear.

You only changed the motherboard and processor, the video card, and sound card, are the same. When you used your P4 Prescott processor and the previous motherboard, you were happy with the performance. Now, the new D-805 and P5PE-VM motherboard, same video card (same driver), same sound card (same driver), you get dismal frame rates ?

What was the model of your previous motherboard ?

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

Dick Blonov's advice is solid. Poor audio drivers and/or conflicts can wreak havoc until fixed. You'd be surprised what I've seen some of the issues I've dealt with surrounding mouse and NIC drivers too (hung NT4 reboots, shutdowns, etc).

What I don't understand is this: your video was more than adequate prior to replacing the mainboard and cpu... did anything else change other than the fresh install? Forgive me if this has been asked and/or answered, I'm short on time and didn't go back very far in the thread.

*sigh* No luck.

I'm putting back in my Audigy LS. I'm going to try to see if Creative has a newer driver for my card and see if that helps.

edit: No luck with the new drivers either.

Guess I'll have to wait a few months to get a new video card and putting my online gaming on hold until then. *sigh*

I just checked your motherboard (P5PE-VM) manual. Since this comes with built in graphics, the AGP aperture setting in BIOS is 64MB by default, way too low IMO. Try setting this at 256MB. If you reply with your old mobo model, I'll check out what it was set at (unless you know off hand).

Don't give up!

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

Hmm I revisited my PC Probe 2 (ASUS Temperature/Voltage Utility) and my Pentium D might be overheating. On idle, both BIOS and Probe is reporting temps around 72 C and on load (100% CPU Util), Probe is reporting 80 - 86 C. And since Probe's CPU temp max is 80 C, I figure, I might have to apply some AS5 and reseat the HSF. I'm also looking into a possible replacement HSF, but all the ones I see for the LGA socket are monsterous. Any suggestions in that area? Anything around the size of the stock HSF and doesn't cost more than $34 USD?

I just kept revisiting what I've done. I don't think it is a gfx card problem anymore. It's most likely the Pentium D overheating, then clocking down so it doesn't burn itself out. So when I'm gaming, it overheats, clocks down, and my fps suffers. Am I right in that assumption?

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

72oC idle is pretty hot, even for a Pentium D. :x Reseat that heatsink/fan and let us know how it goes.

Yep. The clock will throttle (down to 12.5%, or even less). So you end up with a 266Mhz P4

That would kill your frame rate for sure!

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

Erm, I'm about to order this AS5, but I'm seconding guessing myself as to if I need a new HSF.

Bear in mind, it took me 3 careful hours to put my system back together with this new board and cpu, so I would like not to have to disassemble and reassemble for a new cpu hsf.

Does anyone have suggestions as to if I should replace my stock Intel HSF? And if I don't, what should my cpu temp at load be with stock cooling and a good coat of AS5?

My AMD 3500 has never got above 50 with a stock sink and fan. Do Pentiums really run that hot???

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

Major Update

I apologize for not posting about my status...but here goes.

I have reseated the HSF with a new coat of AS5 applied. CPU temp at idle is around 43 C and on partial load is around 48 C. Unfortunately another problem has arisen.

I now get a very quick BSOD flash followed by a reboot when my system tries to boot into Windows. I have tried the following with no success: 1) BIOS flash to latest 1202; 2) Memory in single channel and dual channel (1 dimm = single, 2 dimms = dual); 3) Swapped a different brand of memory (same DDR400 speed); 4) manually set the timings for my original pair of Corsair value ram; 5) disabled onboard sound and video through BIOS; 6) reset BIOS settings to default; 7) tried booting normally, safe mode, and last known good configuration;

The Corsair RAM I'm using is on the approved list of memory for my ASUS board (the P5PE-VM). The other memory I tried, I cannot say since it is unmarked generic memory.

Anyone else have other suggestions or solutions for this problem?

EDIT: BSOD flash followed by a reboot

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

You'll want to stop it rebooting after a BSOD, the messages are cryptic, but you might be able to figure something out. Eg. Ages ago when I had the same problem I looked at it and it said something about nv*.dll, so looks like something to do with my nForce drivers. Turned out to be the NVIDIA firewall, which apparently a lot of people have problems with.

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

well i can't look at it and read it. it flashes on screen for about 1/2 a second. the only thing i could pick up was at the bottom of the message, and it referenced to memory errors. other than that, I haven't been able to pick up anything else.

Edit: Plus I can't boot into Windows at all, so there's no way for me to remove that file or set of files.

Can you boot in safe mode ? If so, you can disable automatic restart (MyComputer/Properties/Advanced/StartUpAndRecovery/Settings, clear the box called automatically restart).

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

Perhaps you didn't read my post above Lorian's?

I can't boot into Windows period. Not into Safe Mode or otherwise. If I could, I prolly would have fixed whatever the new problem was by now.

I am considering redoing Windows, but am afraid the system will hang or BSOD on a fresh Windows install. I'll let a tech guy nearby take a look at it in the morning and see what solution(s) he presents to me. I really think it might be just a physical memory problem (even though memtest didn't happen upon any errors).

So far I have gone without my working system for: 5 weeks, 1 day, and 19 hours and counting. My temper is about to boil through my skull.
