Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

I don't see any harm in trying a repair install. The OS already seems to be messed up to the point of requiring a reinstall. I think the least you can do now is try to salvage the cururent install so you don't have to reinstall everything again.

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

You probably have figured this out by now, but NVidia cards have a common, terrible, failure when used with some motherboards and Windows. Memory access is thrown into a closed loop cycle, and you BSoD.

What you have done is somehow rolled back/lost the current mobo chipset drivers, and removed the work-around for the Windows/Nvidia memory bug.

You must re-install them, and this will fix this terrible Win/NV screw-up. It's awful that it's been around for so many years and it's so deep in the Windows/NV code that it's not fixed on THEIR end yet.

Visit your motherboard's web page, and grab the latest chipset-driver package for it.

edit: I believe that if you were able to read the BSoD, you would see that it says "nv4.dll" is the problem. If you are some kinda Nvidia fanboy and don't believe me, you can Google "nv4.dll blue screen" and find that this problem goes back at least 3 years.

How do I know? Don't ask.

Hmm well, I know about the nv4.dll problem. It's happened to me in the past. But I didn't think a BIOS flash would cause that sort of problem. I'll let the tech guy I know take a look first before I go and repair the XP install.

Re: Why am I getting such horrid framerates?

I dont know HOW it happened, but my problem started because I was expecting too much from a 350W psu. The machine crashed, and when it rebooted.. BANG .. nv4.dll BSoD over and over.

**SOMEHOW** the most current motherboard chipset driver had been corrupted or rolled back, and I had to re-install the drivers, after researching what this all meant. It took about 4 days to figure everything out and and fix it. I'm an ATI man, and had no idea about this nv4.dll garbage until it happened to me.

Perhaps you were using a nForce board?

Anyways, all is well for now. I've had to start with a fresh install of Windows. But I still don't know of that was the nv.dll BSOD or what. I've ran about every hardware diagnostic I had, and all my hardware components check out. Thanks to everyone who posted and tried to help me! *hugs*
