Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

Well, once again I'm here with another problem (seeing a pattern?). My game has been minimizing during a round. After it minimizes, I am returned to desktop (like usual), but when I click on the game to maximize it, the game crashes. So I have been experiencing this since the 1.10 patch. Now after 1.20, it happens about every 15 minutes. It is very very frustrating. I can find no other documentation anywhere that explains why this happens or how to fix it.

Can anyone help me?

For those of you who will try to troubleshoot. My hardware is fine. Nothing is overheating. My firewall allows undetered access for BF2142 to my network and internet connection. I have tried closing down all non-essential programs running the background. It did not help.

Are you accidentally hitting either of the "Windows Keys" or possibly keying the ALT and TAB key at the same time, I know I'm guilty of this one...

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

Nope, I'm not pushing any minimizing keys (alt+tab).

Science, I wish I could use the same res that I have on Windows all the tiime, but my 7600GS will give me about 15 fps in a heated battle scence at 1280 x 1024. I'm willing to try it at the higher res, though, but that would mean I'd have to turn down the textures and such to low. Does setting my res to same as Windows help with this situation?

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

if you play at 1024x786 then set your windows res to that. not the other way around. i know kind of a pain, but it does help minimize crashes due to alt tabbing out to windows or hitting windows key etc.

Yep, I found this to be completely true, back before I found the widescreen thread I was running a 4:3 resolution in game and 16:9 desktop. If the game minimized it would not come back into the game if I tried. Once I forced my game res to my desktop res, I could task switch with no problems. It doesn't matter which one you change, as long as they are the same.

My guess is that when windows tries to change the screen res "behind 2142's back" to match your desktop, 2142 doesn't figure out that it has been changed. So when you try and go back to 2142 it is still using the res it thinks the card should be set to while in actuallity it's really set to your desktop res, and boom game lock.

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

I have my monitor at 1680X1050 and 2142 forced to that via command line, but I still cannot come back from minimizing the game. The game doesn't support minimizing so if you get back in after you alt-tab your lucky if you can get back at all.

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

I will readjust my 2142 res to 1280 x 1024 then

I'll just suffer with quake 3 graphics.

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

Well the crashing has stabilized a little. It minimizes and crashes about every 30 mins. now instead of 15 mins.

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

You don't have to run 2142 in your desktop res ... you can CHANGE your desktop resolution to 1024 while you are playing, and change it back when you are done. That's what I do.

Keep your game quality settings in HIGH, and just lower your desktop res during gaming sessions if you toggle back and forth a lot for some reason.

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

I really don't like changing my desktop res to 1024 just so I can play 2142. I have my desktop space and area setup to suit my multitasking needs. I don't want to rearrange everything several times a day.

Well I did some more "problem solving". I'm thinking it could be my firewall deciding to check on my cd drives and other hardware (monitoring and such). So I set it into game mode > allow all when I play. I haven't mini-crashed to desktop as much. About once every 1 1/2 hours or so.

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

Do you have any chat apps running or other things that pop up status/informational alerts to the desktop?

I had an extension loaded for Firefox that used to pop alerts on top of everything no matter what. I think it was an early version of forecastfox, it used to wreak havoc on my games if I didn't close the browser prior to launching a game.

Re: Minimize Crash - Can anyone help?

I experimented with MSN and Xfire running and off. Neither had any effect on my game mini-crashing. Also the Setpoint software gives me a pop-up when my battery is about to die, but that also doesn't cause 2142 to mini-crash on me.

I'm pretty sure it's my firewall. I have tried running 2142 without it, and gamed for about 3 hours without a single mini-crash. And I would like to move to a different firewall if it meant this mini-crash problem won't happen, but I haven't found another firewall solution as advanced, comprehensive, or easy to learn as ZoneAlarm Pro.
