Horrid Sounds of Pain

During Northern Strike, I get these horrid schreeching and popping sounds after I get hit with an orbital strike. Most sounds are fine after, except all VOIP is horrid static shreeking. Then eventually sound just stops coming out of all the channels except the back left speaker.

Not sure if this is caused by Northern Strike, but it is the only times it has happened.

I have an X-Fi platinum running the offical Vista 32bit drivers. All sounds on the highest.

(Just wondering if anyone else got this and it is not a hardware/driver issue)

Re: Horrid Sounds of Pain

I am getting the popping sounds from my xfi etreme gamer edition. I know someone posted a way to fix it (wiskey_six I think) but I can't find the tread. It is driving me nuts.

Re: Horrid Sounds of Pain

I'm having a problem as well. Sounds similar, but maybe not the same. Also have an X-Fi. I get like random sound files played, screeching, banging, switching every 2 or 3 seconds. I used to get this with regular BF2142 a long time ago as well, but it seemed to have fixed itself, now with Northern Strike it looks like it's back again.

On Vista the Creative drivers suck. They just came out with a new version. Which one are you using?
What platform are you running on? nvidia nforce? or intel?

I have a nforce 680i board. I`m using the new 2.13.0012 drivers (Released on the 8th, before then there were only beta drivers, though the new ones don`t really have anything new over the beta ones anyways).

I don`t have sound problems anywhere else, just on Northern Strike when I get hit directly by an orbital strike.

Re: Horrid Sounds of Pain

I had this problem with the X-Fi and my old mobo. The screeching went away when I setting the audio to medium (or maybe even low). The problem went away when I upgraded my mobo and cpu (to Asus A8NSLI and AMD X2 4800).

I have absolutely no proof of this, but I figured my slow CPU was bottlenecking the sound data and causing the screeching.

Also, turn your volume down to around 75%. Use your speakers to adjust the volume.

Maxing the volume to 100% on your computer causes all sorts of loud pops and screeches.

I'm getting this and I'm running XP Pro 32-bit w/ an Audigy2 ZS Platinum card. They aren't loud high pitched tones, but they're piercing and annoying the dickens out of my ears.

I updated my bios and now the crackling has stopped. The update also reset my overclock to the default which also could have been the cause of the crackling. I will overclock again tonight and let you know if it is still fixed. I remember reading in one of the threads that you have your computer overclocked a lot. I read that the overclocking can mess with the pci frequency which will cause the crackling in the sound card.

Re: Horrid Sounds of Pain

Just to clarify once again:

I do not get any distortion (i.e.: popping/crackling) anywhere else except in the Northern Strike maps when I get hit directly by an orbital strike. Every other game (include the original 2142) is fine.

And yes Jonan, I do have my CPU overclocked
