Resolved: TeamSpeak issue in Windows Vista

After helping a fellow squad mate resolve an issue with his Teamspeak, I thought I'd post the resolution here in case anyone else is having the same issue.

First of all, here's the scenario:
- In Windows Vista, with no game loaded, user can speak, and can hear in Teamspeak.
- In Windows Vista, with BF2142 loaded, user cannot speak, but can hear in Teamspeak. Voip in BF2142 works fine, however.

Resolution:
- Open the properties of your Teamspeak shortcut.
- Under the Shortcut tab, select the Advanced button.
Check the box to Run As Administrator.
- Under the Compatibility tab, set the compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 2

This resolved this particular issue for this particular user. Your mileage may vary, but I thought I would share.

I'm not sure whether it was the Run As Administrator setting or the compatibility mode that made it work. I personally think that UAC is the culprit though, and more than likely the Run As Administrator setting is what does the trick.

I'd kiss you if it weren't for the fact that I figured this out last week. That was a really annoying thing in Vista.

Another very easy way to solve this is to simply turn off UAC.

Been working on vista for about year and a half now. In all honesty, this resolves many other issues to. Just move the menu selection for what the software made for. I even have a program from win 3.1 working with vista because of this compatiblity mode selection.

While this may be true, I would not be so quick to try to walk an 'average user' through completely disabling UAC on their Windows Vista machine.

In fact, I would not recommend that anyone who is using Windows Vista in an unmanaged environment (e.g. not corporate or enterprise) disable UAC. UAC adds a very much needed layer of security around home users that shouldn't be so quickly discarded. Granted, many popular applications are not UAC-aware yet, especially those that we use here often (BF2142, Fraps, Teamspeak, etc).

However, as you can see in my post and in Eroak's comments, it's not that difficult to make applications work while keeping UAC intact. In my book, the risks outweigh the gains in this particular situation unless the individual who is using Windows Vista is fully aware of the ramifications of what they are doing.

Without going into detail, I'd venture to say that I'm pretty thoroughly aware of the ramifications of UAC being on and off, and I prefer to keep it on when I use it at home.

Also, if other programs don't work you may have to allow the program to write to it's own program folder. I will look around for the article on what needs to be done and in what situations this would be necessary.

You also need to change the audio output option to Wave Sound, as Vista doesn't support DirectSound (which is the default when you install TS).
