Re: Kicked For High Ping

Well, our Conquest server is in Virginia, and the NS is in Texas.

Also, what kind of connection do you have, dial-up, FiOS, DSL, what?

Re: Kicked For High Ping

I have had periods like this, where my ping
is high on every server I play, no matter where
it is. I think it was my ISP because after a week
or so it was back to normal.

*My record ping is 1125. Can you say slideshow?

Re: Kicked For High Ping

I don't believe the TG servers have ping kicks on it. I once saw someone with a ping of 800+ and he just left cause it was unplayable. Best stick to local servers then.

Re: Kicked For High Ping

Cool Guy-

I am in a similar situation as you. I too live on an island (Iceland) and high ping is something that I have had to deal with since I started gaming from here. The most likely problem you face is, as sugested above, geographic. Despite having the highest connection speed possible here in Iceland for both download and upload with my ISP, adjusting the settings of my computer and internet connection, and ensuring that when I am gaming all other applications and unnecessary applications and services are turned off I still experience very high ping (usually 100-250). The reason for this is because of the limited internet peering connections between here and the servers.

When you connect to a server, information will nornally have to pass (or hop) through several other internet connection points between where you are and where the server is. The distance between these points, the quality of the connections, and the total capacity of each link will determine how long it takes for the information to travel back and forth (ping). In my case from Iceland the information goes from my computer to my ISP, then to an internation internet connection point on the coast, then through an undersea cable to Canada, then overland to New York, the overland again to Virginia, then to the server. When I did an analysis last year of my connection (there are several programs that will do this for you - show you each link and how good the connection is) I found that the slowest part was between Iceland and North America. There is basically one cable going west from Iceland to North America and one cable going east to Europe, so all the internet traffic slows down at that point. The more people connecting, the slower it goes, like rush hour on a single lane road.

The reason I shared the above is not to complain, but to explain that you may face a similar problem. Since Malta is an island nation, all of the internet connections leaving the country probably travel via undersea cable(s) somewhere to mainlaind Europe (probably to Sicily and then Italy). Once it gets to the mainland there are lots of connections for information to travel, but while leaving and entering Malta, the signal probably slows down. This is why almost every server you ping in game is higher than it would be for anyone else.

If you would look more into this, I recommend a program called Ping Plotter that you can use to see all of the hops between your computer and the server you are pinging to see where it might be slowing down.

I hope this helps...I don't mean to imply that high ping is hopeless, but there are lot of things we cannot control that impact high ping and the better informed we are the the better we try to work around them. Good Luck!

I've had a ping of 22173 on World of Noobcraft. Yes thats right 22 seconds. Thay was out of slideshow realm and into watching an artist pant each frame. It would have been faster....
