Re: BF2142 Server #1 Lag

Just a reminder, if you are in game, and get lag spikes that seem to last more than 15 seconds, and seem to be server wide, please type into global chat

"ADMIN: bad lag"

Random players type lag in the chat window every 20 mins or so, but I dont trust those reports. I need to be able to determine at what exact times this lag is happening, and I need to know that it is serverwide. When you get that warping kind of lag, ask your squadmates over voip if they are getting it, or ask over teamspeak, and once confirmed, type the message into global chat.

If you have more info that is helpful, then please post it in this thread. Player count when it happens, map, pings, duration or anything else that seems helpful is most useful.

Banter like the following:

Is not helpful. We know this needs to be addressed and have stated as much. We are asking for your help in addressing it. To do this, we need information about when the lag happens, and what kind of circumstances are present when it happens. The post you quoted G-man is an example of a helpful post, yours is an example of a post that is not helpful.

If the lag only happens when our server is full, it reduces the likelihood of the problem being due exclusively to another server on the box or some random hardware issue. lag would be correlated with player load. if we could determine this, it would be very helpful.

sick of lag anyone?

Admin's you can delete this thread if you feel the need to, and im sure this topic everyone is well aware of. As of lately, anyone who has played on the 2142 server will understand my frustration.

i understand people are "looking-into-it" , as of the last 2 weeks(maybe more, i lost track) i have gotten many responses and possible "reasons" as to why and what might be causing the bottleneck.

This thread is not about the "cause" of the bottleneck lag, but the "effect" of the bottleneck lag.

one of the main reasons why the TG server is so great is that its always full, But honestly, if this issue stays in the server for alot longer you will notice less and less people logging onto the TG 2142 server.

fact of the matter is they are tons and tons of other servers out there.
I myself am a die-hard-fan of TG and will never leave.

But others not so loyal might not think so.

Its just very frustrating that all of our paying supporting members, cannot enjoy the game as it is meant to be played. this lag stops everything.
it disappointing in the fact that sometimes i will actually drop the game for the night because of lag issues. even though i dont want to.

simply, i have a feeling you will start to see no-supporting-player count starting to drop if this does not get resolved.
*sigh*

Re: sick of lag anyone?

I agree that the lag is becoming a more serious issue, but it will not dissuade me from remaining with the TG servers as long as I can stand it. There are still times when the lag is not there or weak, and those times are the times I enjoy the most playing. So, I'll stick around as long as I can and hope that a solution is found soon. ^_^

Drakin what would you like the admins to say? I mean no disrespect, but, what exactly are you looking to get out of this thread. The admins at TG are always trying to provide the best environment for everyone. Apophis prides himself on providing the very best equipment the community can afford. When they say they are looking into it, then that's what they are doing. Would you like them to just throw a bunch of money at it and hope it fixes the problem? Things take time and I think leaning towards the side of patience is a good tactic to use in this situation.

Again I mean no disrespect but I don't see what this thread is going to accomplish

Re: sick of lag anyone?

Drakin, given that you don't know what is causing the lag, you don't have a solution, exactly what is your goal here? Does publicly venting your frustration fix the problem? Do you not think the admins are already feeling that frustration ten-fold?

If everyone started their own thread to express their personal frustrations with the lag then the forums would be full of them. Not trying to come down on you hard here, but it seems a pointless thread that will achieve nothing constructive.

Re: BF2142 Server #1 Lag

After rereading my post I want to apologize if the tone of my report sounded ungrateful; I think some of us in the community (including myself) have taken the server performance and the work the admin team is putting in for granted. I would like to thank the admin team in advance in working torwards a solution to this problem - I am sure it is pretty frustrating to diagnose

So... rumor has it that a mystery administrator from the 7th has had enough about the whining and is about to explode

Re: sick of lag anyone?

Drakin, I understand your frustration. Admins are players too. This will get resolved. But I can not give you an exact time table. We need more information before we can move forward with diagnosing the cause. Specifically, we need players to report when this kind of lag is happening.

When you experience really bad lag that is clearly server wide, please type the following into global chat:

admin: bad lag.

I am going through the logs looking for that statement specifically and looking at the time it was posted. I have been asking players to do this for the past few days.

So far I have 3 reports. all of which I was present on the server for...

I will need more concrete examples so we can track this down.

Right now we are looking into the following:

Battlerecorder: Seems unlikely, BR would cause lag spikes at predictable times when it is transferring files via FTP. Those lag spikes would been seen in higher ping times. During the lag spikes, we are not seeing changes in pings.

Punkbuster screenshots: Taking punkbuster screenshots will lag the client who is having their SS taken, but not the entire server. There is a remote possibility this could be contributing to the lag, but it has never caused a server wide 20+ second lag spike.

Server scripts: we have some custom scripts running on the server to ensure people will squad up and to make sure there is room for supporting members. As a last resort, we will disable these scripts to test if they are lagging the server. logic states that they do not lag the server under normal circumstances. our previous host ran the same scripts without these lag problems.

The host: I believe, but am not certain yet, the problem lies with the host. We are working with them to resolve any issues they may have on their end. To do this, we need times when it is laggy. We need are more specific description of the lag, including times when it is lagging, player count when it is lagging, map when it is lagging. etc.

If you what to complain, fine, I understand the need to vent. If you want to help, you will post detailed lag reports in the following thread:

Re: sick of lag anyone?

Give it time. If it's a gamespy problem, then they'll get it handled sometime in the coming weeks or risk their contract or future contracts with EA.

Technical problems take time and waiting can be frustrating and boring at times, but it's all worth it in the end when the issue is finally resolved.

Re: BF2142 Server #1 Lag

Guys, Keep this thread to helpfull posts only. We know this is a serious issue.

Keep all personal threads and thoughts that hinder this lag issue at home. This isn't helping this at all. If you want to get this fixed, please do as Sc1ence requests.

Re: BF2142 Server #1 Lag

after looking more in depth at this, we are doing a test to rule out battle recorder. The lag started about the same time as we switched on BR. I may be a bit too quick to suspect it is a problem on the host end. The conquest server has been hosted by wolf for a long time without issue.

Re: BF2142 Server #1 Lag

I'll start posting the "admin: bad lag" comment in global chat if it happens while I'm playing, though I've run into an unrelated problem on my computer that may force me to reformat and reinstall O/Ses this weekend. Still, thanks for your hard work so far in this matter!

Re: BF2142 Server #1 Lag

Around 2:30pm EDT
Belgrade
Lag started at the end of the previous round and stayed.
Other squad members also reported choppiness and lag.
Server was full.
Posted ADMIN: BAD LAG in chat.

I usually never have any problems on belgrade, it is one of my favorite maps.

Re: BF2142 Server #1 Lag

I've been playing starting at 9pm EDT until 1:45am EDT on 6/16 and have had no, I repeat no lag. We had one period of rubber banding at 12:30am, but it only lasted ~15s. The server has been full the entire time.

This was the absolute best. The server felt like it was back in rare form tonight. Even the big armor maps didn't slow us down.

Hooray for whatever the admins and wolf did. Gameplay was solid!!!

We are still testing some settings, more lag reports would be helpful.

Re: BF2142 Server #1 Lag

personally the lag seems to start when i see lyramion in a walker. Maybe we should ban his usage of walkers for at least a trial run, of say a year?
