game will not start - no error msg

Returned today from week & half vacation, haven't played at all. Game was working just fine last day I played on this system.

Trying to start up, I've got a custom 2142 shortcut, auto-login to EA & soldier pick. Click the shortcut, I get cursor + hour glass for 3-4 sec.. then nothing. No error message, just back to desktop. Tried using generic BF2142 shortcut, same results.

I've tried uninstalling EA Link, re-installing, same results. Tried setting DEP to have BF2142pace.exe as an exception, rebooted, same results (read about that one on Total BF2142 forum.). Tried starting the game form within EA Link (the Ready to Play link under My Games) - same results.

System specs are: Windows XP Media Center 2005, I've got the online purchased version of the game. Nothing upgraded/changed since I last played, video card, or other hardware-wise.

I'm prepared to do the old uninstall/redownload *ugh* and reinstall routine (4th, 5th time now!), but wanted to check here for suggestions.

I had same problem before after I was gone for a few days and after hours of trying to figure it out I reinstalled my video drivers and then it worked. I have no idea why, but it work for me.

I'll give that a shot.. Will be so much quicker than the alternative redownload and reinstall.

You should keep the game files downloaded though to save a headache in the future.

What do you have an anti-virus? A few days back me and a member of the ninth had a issue where our AV software picked up the launcher file of the game as a virus. Since then, an update to the AV has fixed it.

A few solutions to this problem.

1) Set your exe to "windows 2000 compatibility" then start. The game may run, if it does, close the game and set the compatibility back to whatever it was.

2) Set both launcher.exe and BF2142PACE.exe (assuming you bought from EA Link) to "windows 2000 compatibility" and run the launcher. The game may run, if it does, close the game and set the compatibility back to whatever it was.

3) Delete the key 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PACE Anti-Piracy and delete the key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\PACE Anti-Piracy from your registry. Then delete the folder C:\ProgramFiles\Common Files\PACE Anti-Piracy and start your game.

I have to do a combination of 2 and 3 for mine to work. I believe this happens when EA Link can't verify your cd key, or you run the BF2142PACE.exe instead of the launcher (although people with the DVD get this sometimes which confuses me).

I'm running Symantec Corporate v. 9.

I'll try those compatibility and other suggestions for registry editing.

I'm constantly amazed that you have to jump through hoops like this for just a game. At least I'm comfortable editing the registry; I feel sorry for those who have to deal with their tech support.

Yeah, I've never experienced this many problems with a game before. My favorite thing is that all these problems crop up randomly without warning nor reason.

Yeah, Zoopy's fixes sounded like an easier/safer work around. The only reason I would recommend AV tinkering would be if you knew it was that. The next day AVG updated and had no more problems.
