Memory Question ?

I want to add some memory to my computer but I don't know what type to buy. I am basically unfamilier with the terms DDR 400 (PC 3200) and DDR2 800 (PC2 6400). Are they compatable with most motherboards? I have a Compaq but don't know what brand the motherboard is. I will be adding 1Gb and it will budget minded, most likely from Newegg. Here is the info on my computer.
AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ 2.2 GHz, 1gb ram with a Nvidia 7600 GTS card running XP.

Re: Memory Question ?

Crucial has a system memory scanner that will tell you what you need, and recommend memory types. They are a pretty happy memory company.

You can't beat this advice.

Re: Memory Question ?

When adding memory you should be aware that RAM does not play well with others. You may experience reduced performance as well as errors running two different brands, speeds, or types of RAM. Whenever possible your RAM should be the same manufacturer, model, and speed/type.

Re: Memory Question ?

And buy in pairs!

On a side note, dont bother going above 2 GB. I have a monitor on my usage, and I have yet to see a program that fully utilizes anything over 1.5 GB. Even SupCom, argueably the most intensive game I have, barely caps over 1.8 GB on long games. BF2142 has yet to break 1.6 GB on my machine.

I'm betting you're running Windows of some form or another, probably XP? Windows is notorious for not effectively utilizing over about 1 GB of RAM.
