Exclamation Punkbuster heart attack.

So. I'm playing my game quite merrily, then BOOM!
I'm like, 'wtf' as the screen goes all black, then, emerging from the darkness:

'warning, Punkbuster has encountered an error and needs to close'

so you minimised my game for that?

so I end the bf2142 proccess and check the PB log:

[07.10.2007 19:07:12] RESTRICTION: Service Communication Failure: PnkBstrB.exe heartbeats stopped

electro-shocking my PC didn't really help...at all.. any ideas? I downloaded the manual patcher so it's up to date. this happens quite often. Usually when I least want it to.

Re: Punkbuster heart attack.

PB is just one of those things that had good intentions, but makes life harder for those who don't hack/cheat. I think a heartbeat refers to PB communicating with its database/hacker-check not completing successfully. You connection probably got interrupted by something.

I get PB errors about 4 times a week I think.

Re: Punkbuster heart attack.

nope, I didn't want to risk the .bat thing because it didn't turn into a cog when I added the extension (might be because I'm using alienguise)

Re: Punkbuster heart attack.

PB craps out on me a lot and I have found a fast way of testing it and reinstalling it if necassary:

http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe

This program works wonders. It doesn't solve the issues of it crashing but it does make the uninstall/reinstall process more efficiant. Even more honesty I have had a lot of problems with 2142 and have wasted a lot of time trying to solve them and have learned the work-arounds are less stressful than troubleshooting.

Re: Punkbuster heart attack.

You might also try increasing the time between punkbuster checks on your PC.

Re: Punkbuster heart attack.

Another big issue is that when you manually end the BF2142.exe process through task manager, the punkbstra.exe and punkbstrb.exe processes dont close. As a result, 2142 will not be playable again until you close these processes down manually or restart your system.

I thought they run on your system whether the game is launched or not? I know of several occasions where they wer ein the process list and the game was not launched right after starting my computer.

Re: Punkbuster heart attack.

PnkBstrA runs all the time as a system service. PnkBstrB is started by BF. If you close BF yourself, make sure PnkBstrB is killed also. If PnkBstrA ever stops, you can restart it through the Services control panel.
