Voip<->headset

Here's my problem. I bought a new headset. I log in on teamspeak.
If I plug the headphones in, I can't hear what anyones saying, I
can if I use my speakers. I have the same problem in game. I can hear
everything else but voip. And when I talk, people can barely hear me.
I have no idea whats going on. Any help would be great.

Are you using the USB connection? If you are try with the regular 3.5mm jacks into your soundcard.

Which jack are you using? Do you have windows set up for headphones?

Either one will cut out some channels if you normally use a 5.1 system. Doubt it would matter much if you use 2 desktop speakers.

I am using a 5.1 system. That could be the problem then.

In windows, go to Control Panel; Sounds and Audio Devices; Audio tab.

Make sure headphones is selected for output and Mic/line in for input. Hit apply if you change these before trying to adjust volume.

I would ensure mic boost is indeed enabled. When I went from using a USB headset (which did not require mic boost) to 3.5mm front panel jacks, I had to keep going in and enabling mic boost. It sticks now, but I can tell you that it was extremely frustrating having to constantly alt-tab out of 2142 and recheck mic boost.

As far as why you can only hear out the speakers and not the headset, I'll hazard a guess and suggest changing your speaker config from 5.1 surround to stereo headphones, you could be missing the channels that VoIP and/or TS travel on.

I mean on the sound card itself. If you match up the colors, normally you'll get it wrong. 90% of the headphone jacks for the speakers are black, which will give you the rear channels, you'll want to plug into the green female, front channel jack, and then do this...

Control Panel - > Sound and Audio Devices

Advanced under Speaker Settings, Choose Destop Stereo Speakers, or Stereo Headphones.

I have one cable coming from my headphone, it splits into two cables one for my mic and one for the speakers, the two cables are pretty short.
I think I know what to do to fix it, I plug the mic into the jack of the soundcard and plug the speaker into this:

I think that should fix it but the cables are too short.
PS: I have Windows Vista.

If you're trying you use both the headphones and speakers at the same time, it won't work very well. Half the sounds will be on the desktop speakers and the other half on the headset.

Heres a diagram of what I mean by the front channel jack on the sound card. I use an Audigy 4, but most 5.1 cards are generally the same. If you stick the speakers into any other jack aside from the front channel, it won't play all the sounds, if any.

As far as Vista...I'm not sure how the speaker setup works on it since I've never used it, and don't plan to for at least another year.

In Vista, try right-clicking on the speaker/volume control down in the system tray (next to the date/time). On the pop-up menu select Recording Devices.

Make sure the default is set to your headphones, and you can also get into your setup and configure for voice recognition - it will basically check to make sure your headphone is configured correctly.

You can also right-click the volume control, and select Playback Devices - make sure your headphone are selected as the output and test from there.
