BF2142pace.exe has stopped working

Was out of town last week, played BF2142 a few times on my laptop just fine - aside from lousy Internet connection at LaQuinta Milwaukee - but that's beside the point.

On returning home, tried to fire up 2142 on my desktop, and got the "BF2142Pace.exe has stopped working" message. Did some searching and found a batch file (Total BF2142 site I think) that removes the PACE anti-piracy registry keys. Ran it on the desktop, and it was back running just fine.

Have since tried to run 2142 on my laptop, and getting the same error message. Except running the batch file doesn't fix the problem. Run the batch, reboot, no dice.

Both desktop and laptop are running Vista Ultimate, and 2142 was playing just fine on both systems before my trip, and on the laptop *during* the trip.

Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to avoid the ultra-fun uninstall/redownload through EA Link/reinstall 2142 experience if at all possible.

What anti-virus software do you run? I run AVG-Free and it claimed BF2142Pace was a virus and deleted it on me once or twice, then two days later the next AVG update fixed it.

Same situation, it was working fine, then next day it was freakin' out on me.

I'm running Symantec Corporate (unmanaged) ver. 10. Don't see anything in the Risk History or Event Logs in AV.

Re-downloaded and installed yesterday. May do an uninstall of EA Link, and reinstall again. I've heard this can trash your current games settings, but it's looking more and more likely that I'll have to re-download the entire game anyway..

Re: BF2142pace.exe has stopped working

Caught msg on another board about setting BF2142pace.exe as an exception application if Data Execution Protection (DEP) is turned on. Added that yesterday, no change in results.

Tried this morning, added pnkbstrA.exe and pnkbstrB.exe as exceptions as well. Going to reboot and see if that has any affect.

Heh, really looks like reinstalling is gonna be your best bet. I keep the downloaded install files on my PC now, not going through that download again.

Re: BF2142pace.exe has stopped working

Does your batch file also delete the C:\Program Files\Common Files\PACE Anit-Piracy folder? Also do you run the batch after every failed start up (PACE files are created on every start up)?

Other things could be sound. I had my onboard sound on and my X-fi soundcard on and it caused the game to crash...

Re: BF2142pace.exe has stopped working

I've purchased a copy of the game on DVD, mainly so my son (Noskeeper, a new SM here at TG) can play together... So I'll try that on the laptop. Crossing my fingers..

Also try adding BF2142Launcher.exe to it, that fixed it for me.

Re: BF2142pace.exe has stopped working

Found a solution to this problem:

Close out EA Link then log back in

Go to the folder that contains the bf2142pace.exe file, and right click and set it to run in compatibility mode for windows 2000 and do the same for bflauncher.exe.

Launch the game as you normally do. Close it, go back and disable compatibility.

Sometimes this doesn't work on the first try, so you may have to restart, its a really odd fix, found it on a forum after googling awhile ago.
