Exclamation Mic problems--Windows and VOIP

As I'm sure those of you who've played with me in the past day or so have noticed, I'm having problems with my mic. When I try to speak to my squaddies, my voice comes through patchy and intermittently. It's not my push to talk button on my Nostromo; I have the same problem when I go to Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices --> Voice --> Test Hardware, which totally circumvents the push to talk button.

It all started when I tried to get my computer to work with TeamSpeak and VOIP at the same time. For some reason, when I first installed TeamSpeak (and after configuring it properly--yes, I double- and triple-checked), I couldn't run both TeamSpeak and VOIP in the game; it would make VOIP all static every time I tried to speak. So I took it upon myself to see if I could figure out the problem today, and lo and behold, I've broken both. Problem is, I didn't actually change any configuration settings I didn't immediately change back. I've uninstalled TeamSpeak and reinstalled the drivers for my sound card (multiple times) to no avail. I've also tried ganking my husband's headset, but my headset worked fine on his computer and his headset gave the same results I'd been getting on my computer.

I'm starting to think the problem is with the Realtek HD audio stuff my on-board sound uses, but I have no idea what to do about that. Anybody had anything remotely like this happen, or know why it might be happening to me?

Re: Mic problems--Windows and VOIP

Maybe check for newer drivers if you're running older ones. I know there are a few people who have issues with TS and VoIP running together, so its definitely not a freak issue.

Re: Mic problems--Windows and VOIP

The drivers I've been installing have been the only set they have posted on the web site, so I'm willing to bet they're the latest. I think I'm going to crack open my case tonight and see if I can't get my front-side jacks working. Now that I think about it, I tripped over the cord for my headset a week or two ago and messed up the mic plug itself--had to buy a new headset. Granted, I was having the VOIP/TS problem before that, but I think the jack itself may have been damaged, which could be causing the problems I'm having now. If that's not it, I have no clue what to do. Thanks for the input!

Try opening the run dialog and typing dxdiag and going to sound, then lowering hardware acceleration to basic.

Thanks--I'll try that when I get home. I'd like to be sure this isn't a software problem before I muck about with the hardware.

I had a similar problem where my voip wouldnt work past a minute when I joined a server, adjusting that helped me at least hear other people. But my mic was also broken, so I had to get a usb headset to bypass the sound proc.

I hope I don't have to do that--I like the headset I have. The chick in me likes the fact that you can change the color of the headphones.

Re: Mic problems--Windows and VOIP

I'd lean toward that realtek audio. I've had the issue before with realtek onboard audio - I shouldn't point to realtek specifically because I also had the same problem with Creative on-board audio.

Edit: I never bothered to do much troubleshooting over it because my main PC has a seperate X-Fi card. But it may have to do with hardware priority.

Re: Mic problems--Windows and VOIP

I had the static problem with TS and BF. I had to set TS to use the WAVE input instead of the Directsound driver under Settings->Options->"Sound Driver". After getting that set, you might need to reboot. I also have Realtek HS stuff on my ASUS P5N32-E SLI mobo.

Oh, believe me, the terms "on-board" and "audio" don't sit well with me when problems crop up. I think I've had more problems with on-board sound on motherboards than anything else, and I've built (or helped build, in this case) all the computers I've owned in the last six years. Also, I've done a lot of Googling on this problem, and none of the resolutions I've found that have worked for other people have had anything to do with Realtek. I don't particularly like the GUI Realtek gives you for manipulating settings for input/output, either; it's very simple, which makes it very non-versatile, and it has no hardware/software test or diagnostic function (which, IMHO, all sound/voice software should have).

I tried setting it to use WAVE input, but I didn't reboot after doing so; I'll try that later. I want to say I'm also running an ASUS mb, but I can't remember what kind off the top of my head (and I could be wrong--it might be my last computer I put an ASUS in). I'll check when I get home. Thanks!

Re: Mic problems--Windows and VOIP

I presume you are running Windows XP SP2?

You might try re-installing Microsoft KB888111, which adds the support to XP SP2 for HD Audio.

Ah ha! I figured someone might have an inkling toward a Windows-type solution. That'll probably be the first thing I try. Thanks!

Update:
Well, no joy on anything, so far. I think I might just try doing a system restore to before I started messing around with it and leave it at that. I'm tired of fiddling with it and, most of all, I want to be able to play! Thanks for the input, all.

Re: Mic problems--Windows and VOIP

I had all kindsa problems with my Realtek and a plug in mic headset. I did all the things suggested above but never could get it work consistently. I switched to a USB setup and all my problems went away. Realtek still runs in the tray but is totally bypassed by the USB device.
