Battlefield 2 - Historical Patch Timeline (For some Perspective)

Posting this so we don't forget how many patches there were to fix things in BF2 and to not be totally discouraged with the bugs in BF3 because it's not like DICE isn't well known for bugs and introducing new bugs while fixing old ones.

Battlefield 2 PC - Historical Patch Timeline.

Initial released on June 21, 2005

    Patches:

Patch v1.01 on release week. Server Stability Patch I believe.

Patch v1.5 (09-01-2009) - This is the long-awaited version 1.50 patch for Battlefield 2. Additional support for Windows Vista. - Added Highway Tampa as a required map. - Added a new map called Operation Blue Pearl. - Added Euro Force and Armored Fury as free to play content for all Battlefield 2 players.

Although this does give us some perspective, we're dealing with EA & DICE on this one now. May be a completely different ballgame, only time will tell if it's for the better or for the worse.

Re: Battlefield 2 - Historical Patch Timeline (For some Perspective)

Yeah technically BF2 was EA/DICE. They just didn't have EA in the process for the first part of it's development.

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/EA-DIC...162140?sk=wiki

    EA's acquisition

In November 2004, Electronic Arts announced their intent to purchase all outstanding shares in Digital Illusions CE at a price of SEK 61 per share. The board of directors of Digital Illusions CE recommended that the company's shareholders accept the offer. Electronic Arts owned 62% of Digital Illusions CE on March 31, 2005.

On October 2, 2006, EA completed the acquisition for SEK 67.75 per share for 2.6 million shares, for a total of SEK 175.5 million. Digital Illusions CE was renamed EA Digital Illusions CE, and CEO Patrick Söderlund became an EA Studio General Manager. DICE Canada, which at the time was being run by DICE co-founder Fredrik Liliegren, was closed down immediately upon acquisition.
And what they fail to mention was the Desert Combat boys that were brought on suddenly found themselves pushed out the door through various means. So they left their former Trauma Studios (Edit add I guess EA DICE owns it now) and created Kaos Studios. I kind of liked some of the part of Frontline: Fuel of War. It was new and inventive in some forms but as a whole I never got into it.

BTW I never did play Homefront but I heard both good and bad things about it.

    Thought provoking post, thanks kilroy!

It's hard to think we've only had BF3 for 3 weeks now! It's still got that new car smell

I was gun shy about investing in Homefront after FFOW.

Homefront was a lot of fun, but I had some performance issues on hardware that should have been fine, and draeh hit it square on the head, lots of "Well, I would, but I hated FFOW".

BF2 patching was a long and arduous process, sure. But BF2 started with voip, commander, functional squad management, and an actual intent to make PC the only game in town. Only time will tell, but optimism should carry the day here, as hard as it is to maintain it sometimes. Good things come to those who wait, as long as they don't starve first. :P

this pretty much says it. you're saying 'look how long it took to fix BF2,' when a) BF2 shipped, for most, working and b) they didn't have to patch half the game back into it.

EA's planned BF3 lifecycle will be over by the time a stable version of this game gets released. let alone adding features...

You misunderstood me I think. BF2 was broken when it was released. Set aside the technical challenges like constant CTDs and server disconnects and harken back to the days when AA missiles did stuff like this, when the only gun to use was the Eryx or SRAW, when tanks were, for a short time, invincible from nearly every angle of attack, etc. There were a lot of problems, and DICE spent years bughunting with community help. The foundation of unscripted, low hassle, spontaneous teamwork is probably the only thing in place in which BF2 has any claim to truly be better than BC3 right now.

As far as a lifecycle, as long as they make quality DLC, the BC3 community will buy it, many people at TG included, because let's face it, good quality DLC isn't all that bad (derrrrr). Special forces was fun, and the boosterpacks, while not necessarily worth the sticker price, were still well made and added some fun stuff. As long as the community is willing to shell out for quality DLC, the game will continue to be supported. BC3 has a full, long life ahead of it, and the benefit of starting from rock bottom in the teamwork department means it can only get better from here.

i didn't misunderstand you. i simply was saying that for a majority of people, BF2 ran for more than fifteen minutes. that's all.

however, that second paragraph there i totally disagree with. EA is fast-tracking BF for the cashgrab bandwagon. there will be another standalone game out within ~1.5 years, guaranteed. probably sooner. they will abandon BF3 development (that thing you're suppposed to do BEFORE you release a product) at that point. DICE doesn't give two ****s about your BF experience as long as EA keeps paying them.

    Rep

Anyone know if you can plus rep with the TG mobile app?

Good post to provide perspective on the history of patch releases, not only for Battlefield, just think for a minute about numerous other AAA titles (or however they are referred to) and patches released. If it had to be perfect before release, it never would have launched
Q: How many members of Congress does it take to change a light bulb?
A: None. There is nothing wrong with the light bulb; its conditions are improving every day. Any reports of its lack of incandescence are delusional spin from the liberal media. That light bulb has served honorably, and anything you say undermines the lighting effort. Why do you hate freedom?!?

Actually most stand alone titles of this caliber from companies that are under the EA umbrella take 2 years minimum to develop and only if they no other content. That beings said we know that BF3 is going to have DLC which means they will be members of DICE working on this additional content. This will delay any release of another major title from DICE. So I expect a Mod much like we saw for BC2 with Vietnam except it will be for Battlefield. There is precedent in BF2 with Special Forces and the Expansion Packs. I see BF3 being patched and added to for the next year to year and a half with maybe something in two years. But I expect their next major title release of another Battlefield named game (BF4) some time in 2014 if I were to guess.
