One of the biggest choices which a server administrator has to make is, whether to run the server in Ranked or Unranked mode.
In Ranked mode, player progression is tracked on EAs master servers. Weapons are unlocked by playing the game. Player progression is also visible on Battlelog. The server administrators will have to abide by the Battlefield Rules of Engagement.
In Unranked mode, player progression is not tracked on the master servers. Server administrators have free reign on such servers – no Battlefield Rules of Engagement to heed. They can control in detail which weapons are available to the players, etc. This mode is suited to playing clan matches, tournaments, or to those players who just like the fairness of everyone having the same range of weapons available to them.
Well now, that's a VERY interesting development!! Our venerable BF2 server was unranked, and despite not having any unlocks, was wildly successful...
BF2 had unlocks and was one of the first games to do that but there were not many and they were not powerful or more useful, so in BF2 going unranked and turning unlocks off didnt really matter
BF3 will have 50 or more unlocks and most players would not even consider an unranked server for normal day to day play
I expect TG to have a solution like 2142, ranked + squadless autokick + Sm slots + FF on (assuming this is allowed on ranked servers)
I'm thinking it'll be harder to attract players with an unranked server, but easier to make the game more to our tastes (possibly including removing the unbalancing splash damage weapon(s)). Of course unranked would also bring up the inevitably divisive question of what "our tastes" exactly are...
It may be a viable option down the line but ranked and vanilla-ish seems a good place to start.
2 servers.....Ranked Vanilla and Unranked tweaked. It will probably take 3-4 months before hardcore people get enough stuff unlocked that they will even consider an unranked server....people like toys. But after that period I think an unranked tweaked server would be a great idea.
If we can have a server with all toys unlocked from start I´m all for that
well thats no fun......also I believe in older BF titles you could just "allow" unlocked weapons.....meaning if you had it unlocked you had it in game.....if you didn't well tough cookies, go play more ranked.
People care about ranks and stats even if many of us do not. Going unranked would close the door on a lot of potential TGers that many never find us otherwise and lose the opportunity to show how great teamwork can be.
Looks like I may be wrong. I am surprised they would take this approach.

On unranked servers, it is up to the server admin whether the players' rank should control which weapons each player has available (plus any preorder incentives), or whether all players should have the same, customized list of weapons available to them. In the latter case, players can have access to weapons which are above their current rank.

Bravo Microsoft, you have now surpassed EA in poor decisions and once and for all seized the crown for the worst 'Reveal' ever. That EA were standing there on the stage with you when you did it was...

It is not often that I encounter across myself when researching a topic. I found the following in a recent article on the uses of ethnography in virtual environments:

Took a gamble and got a refurbished 30 GB OCZ Vertex 1 off of NewEgg for the low, low price of $30. Had some trouble getting the drive to be recognized by Windows or by my BIOS. Had to use a jumper...
