Discussion: Tactical / Battlefield 3 - Use/non use of Teamspeak - Had an interesting experience I wanted to share with you all last night regarding use
Had an interesting experience I wanted to share with you all last night regarding use - non use of teamspeak.
I joined up in the evening and found a TG led squad under Melee. I was the 4th squaddie to join and that was good. Player 1 (Melee) 2 & 4 (me) were on TS in channel and communicating.
Player 3 says to player 2-Hey lets jump on Vent....Suddenly we lose comms from player 2 and with it a significant amount of combat effectiveness.
My take is they were both from a common not TG community that utilizes ventrilo for it's own communication. Player 3 must not use TS and asked player 2 to join in on their own ventrilo channel. I texted in squad chat..."you guys should really be on TS with us to help the squad" ...no response. Round changes and Player 2 and 3 are gone, still on the TG server but now on their own presumably on Vent somewhere. Most likely not communicating with their new squaddies...Again I texted to the team about TS but again no response.
The first couple of weeks I've been pretty loose about TS but as a SL going forward if you are not in TS you will be kicked from my squad. Same goes for orders. First couple of weeks I've tolerated the occasional lone wolfer by trying to wrest any useful intel from them while out away from the squad. No more. If you aren't with the squad you will be kicked. Small loss for you maybe but I'm slow and old and need as much help as possible. A full squad, working in tandem, is my weapon of choice.
I get it...those reading this forum probably don't need to hear this message but I felt it had to be said.
I know it's unlikely but i'd very much like to see a TS requirement for playing on our servers like we've had in the ARMA world at times. I've heard it said over and over how TG'ers hate to join a squad who isn't communicating and this measure would go a long way towards solving the issue.
I only kick players from my squad if they demonstrate they are unwilling to follow and work with the squad. I don't need them all to be in TS, I just need them to be spawning on the squad and helping us accomplish our objective, be it defending or attacking.
I have had several pubbies who were not in TS but did an excellent job of running with the squad.
On the flip side I have had guys in TS who would not work with the squad, even after I asked them to repeatedly.
I don't understand. You kick everyone that's not on TS?
So how are we going to get new blood to TG?
I.... I don't get it.
Its obvious. He wants to be able to talk to his squad. Im pretty sure a text warning would be given out to warn the people that are not using TS to either "get on" or "get out."

This all over. I know it's annoying when people don't communicate, but with BF3's built-in communication systems being like UHT milk (NSFW language, accents), few non-TG players will be used to working as a tight, talking squad. Allowances have to be made, otherwise you might as well create a locked 'TG ONLY' squad and roll with them.

So people are supposed to stop, download and install TS, configure their microphone and keybinds, go to the TG forums, find the server details, go on the server and get in the right channel mid-game?

Or.... they could just join another squad that doesnt mind them not being in TS.
Who the hell said they should get booted from our server if they are not in TS?
I could care less if they are on TS or not as long as they stick with me and do as is "type". Some of the best BF2 players that i have played with didnt use a mic so im used to it.

I completely agree with Westy on this. It is completely absurd to expect a player to drop from the server immediately and do ^^^ that just to play on one of our three servers. It's simpler for that person to just D/C and blacklist us. Requiring TS or kick is not the way to go.
Rather I like Amp's policy, as I do pretty much the same thing. If the squaddie isn't cooperating, kick them from the squad. If they're on TS and not cooperating, avoid them and write their name down for future reference.
Just remember guys, the amount of TS participation we get is directly proportional to how much we promote it in game.
I know this isn't the same as being on teamspeak but make sure you are Q spotting which objective you want them to go for, I know for me sometimes I get tunnel vision and lose track of where my squad had gone and if I wasn't on teamspeak it would be very helpful just to know which direction they went off in, I know it isn't as in-depth of teamwork as being on teamspeak but just knowing where the squad is heading next may deter some people from lone wolfing.
I don't expect a newcomer to stop what they are doing and d/l TS just because I asked them to. But the more times it's mentioned to newcomers the more likely the player is to do it. This affects all of us really as game play is much better with all squad mates communicating.
Maybe I was too harsh...If they are working with the squad they shouldn't get kicked but I'll ask them to Join up in TS if at all possible. If they aren't working with the squad and not on TS...gone. Wouldn't you do the same?
I've only been doing this a day or two now so it's only been one or two players that have gotten the boot. And these were for lone wolfers not on TS ignoring attack or defend orders. I've had a couple of players who for whatever reason could hear me but could not transmit. While not ideal this is way more workable than no TS at all.
Frankly I was more concerned about the scenario I outlined. I'd rather see player 2 say to player 3 "hey, you know this group uses TS and it has a great Team sync function. Why don't you come on TS with the squad?" If we all do that it will make a difference.
I see now its not so clear cut but it's a fine line to walk.
Able, it was done with ArmA for a long time, then it became a hassle for the admins to keep up with all the random players who join, who cant be bothered with reading the server rules/ SOPs, and it was abandoned. I dont think we can kick everyone who joins the server and is not in TS, but it should be a requirement for those who are wearing TG tags to be on TS in the BF3 channels, even if you dont have a mic(although I understand that some people have systems that cant handle the pressure of TS and BF3 at the same time. . . so I let that slide if they are "on the ball" in game). I already started kicking players from my squad who are lonewolfing, spawning on aircraft or off with their friends at another flag. . and as time goes on it will happen more often.
I agree it makes it hard to get new blood, but I think the point is that we are not a community who caters to the masses, nor who wants every quick gun joining our ranks. We are catering to those looking for a better place to play, with mature players who play for the game, not just to play with their small niche of friends. When I first joined TG, there was a lot of hub bub about us BF players who are not as tactical about our game play from the old school players of PCS, CoD and other small team games where you only had one life to give in a game. It is a difference in game play style from each of our experience in playing games, we cant expect everyone to play on my level, or E-male's level, nor Badgers(as if we could). But we can expect people to play with the squad and support it in the best they can.
IRT...
I am not going to kick players from the squad just because they are not in TS, YET. As many new players dont know about the greatness that comes with playing with a group of team oriented players. The only way to get them into TS, is make them aware of it, to make them aware of how we(TG) do things... we play together.. we follow orders.. we support the team... not just our close friends.
AS for getting new blood.... I have reached out to many "pubber" players that joined the squad, when I inform them of the way we play, they usually join the squad on the field, they say(text) they will check out the website/TS, and they make an effort to play with the squad.. or they continue to ignore me and do their own thing, which gets them kicked from the squad. Just as an example: I remember the night on the BC2 server when we were chatting up "Torres", who is now a regular in TS and our servers... IF we had not done a little chatting with him in game, he probably would still be looking for a good server to play on. A little effort goes a long way.
Just a reminder,
If you are only playing with TG members or IHS members, you are doing it wrong. "Learn TG" squads is how most of us got here to begin with.
If you cannot play on the team you were placed on when you joined the server because all your friends are on the other team, you are doing it wrong.
If you are just idling on the losing team until you can switch to the side that is rolling, you are definitely doing it wrong.
I think the problem is that we have strayed from the requirements that were in place in other titles played here. I know we are not supposed to have those same expectations from other titles with this new title, but I think we should have the same level of expectations for all games played under the TG banner.

1. ask in squad chat to work with squad if lone wolfing
2. ask 1 more time if behavior doesn't change
3. type the reason they are being kicked from squad in squad chat
4. Kick from squad.
50% of the time they rejoin squad and run with us.
