Steam hacked -- change passwords & watch credit cards

I know that this game isn't on Steam, but that makes it all the more likely that some of you won't get notice of this. Also posted about in the Hardware & Software Forum, but it deserves a double post for importance.

Just saw this. It looks to only be forum passwords that were actually obtained and usable. They may have had access to encrypted credit card info, though. So change passwords and watch your CC that is on file.

"Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked.”

Valve are “still investigating” the situation. They mention that there’s been no evidence of illegal credit card activity as yet, and that it’s probably a good idea to change both your Steam passwords. To do that, access Settings from the Steam menu within the client.

If I had to speculate, I imagine it is because people were logging in to the steam website today while trying to circumvent the north-american release date for Skyrim by connecting through chinese, singaporean, indonesian, australian and new-zealand VPN proxies. I took one look at it and concluded that any login information submitted by myself or my computer (remember password etc.) while using a proxy would potentially be compromised and lead to further security breaches at Steam. It would make sense why it happened to day with hundreds of thousands of east coast gamers crawling forums to figure out how to unlock their product early. Me, I get my copy safely in 20 minutes.

There was actually a hack and redirect going on for a few minutes the other day, a group of miscreants put up tons of links to their website advertising such things as VAC proof hacks and pornography to anyone dumb enough to visit the site. I guess the hack was far more involved than just gaining control of the forum topics and header until valve pulled the server.
