Almost glad they broke

I put on my headphones and what do I hear?
Nothing at all, out of one ear.

I had this Logitech headset: Premium USB Headset 350. They were about $35 from Walmart. And back to Walmart they went. I considered my options of other brands, but ended up giving the 350's new replacement a try. The tag at Walmart still said "350" for the new model which is unnumbered: ClearChat Comfort USB.

Silly observation: on both boxes the woman is wearing her headset opposite to the way it was designed. The latter had to be a reverse pic since that mic won't even flip down for use on the other side.

I'm not impressed - but looking on the bright side, they do feel a bit more comfy. And my biggest hatred for the old set is gone! There was this CLONKING every few times I moved a little the wrong way, which was just a little annoying for gaming but a huge annoyance trying to record Librivox files. Good riddance to that.

Unfortunately, gone also is my favorite thing about the old headset - crisp recording with almost no hum. This thing has bad grounding issues and produces an unbearable hum when I'm not firmly gripping the side of my laptop. If I make good contact with the computer while recording the hum is softened so that noise-cleaning can make it decent. This pic shows hum with some looping(? not sure if that's the right term...) and then full-force hum. If it weren't for this big flaw I would be glad my old set died.

While my old set was broke and before I got the new one I started using my stand-alone Samson mic (and just earbuds) for gaming. Its quality is definitely better than the headsets. If it weren't kind of big and in the way.... oh well. I could complain about everything. xD

Ah, I say complain away, at least we can hear any bad things about the headset before any of us have to buy a new pair

In the 4 years I've been here at TG, I'm currently on my 4th headset. 1st I broke because the cord wrapped around my chair and when I pushed away from the computer, something broke (cheap logitech--great headphones though), 2nd pair my daughter got ahold of and drooled all over the mic and ruined them. 3rd pair, worked pretty well, but I had issues with the mic not being close enough to my mouth...apprently I talk too quietly and with the mic that far no one could hear me. The pair I have now I got for Christmas (2008) After about six months, I had to tape the microphone in place, it kept falling down, then the tape would lose stickiness and I have it tied in the correct place with a piece of yarn...maybe I'll post a pic, it's quite amusing

So best of luck, hopefully the humming issue will sort itself out....my brother and I determined there was a law in our family (maybe you can use it), "Leave it alone long enough and it will fix itself"

On a side note, I'd never heard of Librivox, I'm definitely going to have to check that out and on that note, would you be willing to read and record books for a fee? I love listening to audio books since my drive to work is so long, but I hate having to buy them for $50+ dollars and the library doesn't always have the books I want to listen to. Thought it was worth asking about.

Hehe - I'm sure the yarn would be interesting... for a cat. :P

Yeah, Librivox is awesome. All sorts of cool public domain (mostly OLD) stuff there. Shoot me a PM with the kind of stuff you're interested in.

Eeek, I don't think I can stand having that small of a earcup crushing my big ears for my long gaming/voip sessions. Amazingly, you paid more for your headset, than I paid for my Plantronics GameCom 367 set ($35 + tax vs. $22, no tax, free s/h). At least I get some soft velour-ish padding that almost totally cups around my ears (only the lower part of my earlobe is crimped which doesn't bother me at all.

Both of those you guys listed are 3.5mm. Not to say that's bad... but I've heard they often have more hum (grounding/looping problems) than USB. In addition to that - my laptop's audio jacks abut my inclined chill pad, so I can't use both together. :-/

Well any possible humming/buzzing noises are going to be caused by a broken/low quality sound card. USB headsets don't use dedicated hardware to get sound but the 3.5mm headsets must plug into a dedicated device, even if its just a simple as the motherboard's integrated audio chip.
