Time to die.

Always liked that quote. I love sci-fi. No, not Star Wars. SCI-FI. It somehow has to have a tie to reality. The Forbin project, Soylent Green. Oldies, but goodies. They leave you with something to think about. Hell, even the Terminator left me wondering about what we are doing to ourselves. Do you hear that Mr. Anderson, that is the sound of inevitability, that is the sound of your death.

Recurring theme

Like the end of the World.

Not the first time we hear that one ...More Read More

A «gaucher» or a «gauchère» in French is a left-handed person. Nothing to do with the disease.

A SouthPaw. My sister is left-handed. She taught me how to tie my shoe laces and how to deal cards. So I do these things as if I was left-handed. I hold a golf club, and a baseball bat on one side (right hand side), but a hockey stick the other (as the majority of players it seems). I've always been attracted and fascinated by left-handed people. I did a test once, and told my friends I could spot ...More Read More

That's all I need: a spring cleaning check list.

My lovely wife (my second one...) is a cleaning freak. I have nothing against keeping a tidy place. Au contraire. My mother was a slob; I never invited anyone at our house (OK, the fact my father was a sociopath also contributed somewhat). After I moved out and got my own appartment, I was once told by a girlfriend that my bathroom was incredibly clean (I guess she failed to notice my other manly attributes). So clean is good. Spring cleaning ...More Read More

Sometimes, things happen. And you are left thinking about them for days.

Monday:Government Office.

I'm was in the first line up (the one where you wait in line to get a number). This woman is ahead of me, kneeling, filling out her form using her newspaper as support. She looks up at me « do you want to go first ?», I reply, « no, it's your turn, you're ahead of me». Polite, I figure. Stunning grey eyes, in her 50's, a touch of reddish hair color.

«I submitted my paperwork for a passpor ...More Read More

Tuesday: Finally got all my paperwork done. Since I don't travel much anymore, I had to register with the new corporate travel agency. OK, Intranet, Procurement, Travel Policy. «Go to this URL, and enter your profile». Easy enough. NOT. After attempting to reach various people, I find out that the Canadian Employee Profile does not work so I have to register as a US Employee. No sweat, I'm flexible. Complete the forms, advise our admin assistant to please make my reservations mucho pronto since ...More Read More

So they send me the wrong birth certificate.

I go back to the Government Office.

Explain my situation, I get number B2. Wait a while, then it's my turn. So the «dude behind the counter» says «you know, we call this a case of mistaken identity». No kidding, you send me the birth certificate of some other guy. Duh!

So, I'm being very patient and polite. About an hour later, I walk out with my birth certificate.

OK, hang on. The first time, it's 3-6 days by Express Post. Now, it's one ...More Read More

This is not about Uncle Ben's steamy love affair with Aunt Jemima.

It's about cars.

Like it or not, it's a popular hobby. I've know guys who have spent countless hours back in the 70's hand polishing their intakes to get that extra little bit of air flow. Back then, the automotive aftermarket parts business was not what it is today.

After market «performance» is a BIG industry as these 2002 numbers show. Car makers know this too.

So I need to renew my passport.

First off, renew my 20 year old birth certificate. Pay 35 CDN pesos, Express post, 3-6 days, got it. That's my first step. I never get mail on Friday's. Today was different. Master Card bill, and, what ? , Express post! Cool! Tear open the enveloppe, logon the «oh so convenient secured Passport Canada web site», 4 more pages and I'm done. This is going well.

Logon, password, eyeball the birth certificate, «What!» Crap, they screwed up my birth date. No, hol ...More Read More

I used to travel a lot for work. Working for a military contractor meant going around the world to show off the merchandise. I changed jobs in 1991, and I figured, it was over. For the most part I was right.

I ended up having to travel to Virginia, and across Canada, that was about it. So my 1988 passport never got renewed. And following one of many aquisitions, I ended up being demoted, so less travelling, less «grip and grin» sessions. That was fine by me since I was a single parent then, ...More Read More

I came across this post in the 2142 AAR section. This guy should be writing a book. Here's an excerpt, and a link at the bottom so you can read the rest. Even if you don't play 2142, this is a great read (and it seems like there are more coming!):

Blood and Honor, The Journal of a 9th MID Soldier

(Round 1 of the 9th MID vs. TAW BFCL League)

It was a cold morning…just like all the others I’ve experienced in this desolate hellhole. LuckyStrike’s skills might be superb with his weaponry, ...More Read More
