BBC Robin Hood
|

While looking for a DVD in the local Best Buy that I wanted and they thought they had, I came across the BBC presentation of Robin Hood season 1. On impulse, and some vague recollection that somone online on some forum I read said that it was pretty good I decided to pick this up. I mean, this is the freaking BBC, if anyone is going to do Robin Hood justice it really, really should be them. This may be old news for those in Euro-land, but I've not seen this on the shelves here for very long.
I was blown away.
The casting for the series is flat amazing. All of the characters feel multi-dimensional, as opposed to a lot of the canned television that is coming out of America these days.
My favorite character in the series is surely the Sheriff. He is delightfully evil, and completely practical in outlook. The actor that plays him really has great delivery for the many great lines they give the Sheriff. The plays a noble bastard quite well.
Marion is a refreshing break from the sterotypical airbrushed supermodel that you find on many modern American television shows. She is certainly very attractive, but she is more like a person you may see walking down the street then some scientifically enchanced rareified ideal. She excells in playing the game of wits with Robin, and has good skill in expressing verbal reparte when the two characters meet. The push and pull of the conflict there is quite excellent and well done.
The episode plots are varied enough that it retains interest even though there is only so many variations of the basic Robin Hood plotline. The screenwriters did a good job of keeping things moving and fresh. There is an underlaying arc under the series of "oh no, the sheriff has captured Bob"-type plots. While watching the first season I was not bored with the material, and even though there was some plot repetition, the writers keep it fresh with variations so it keeps your attention.
The only thing that really bugged me was the use of chainmail sweaters. Gah! I hate those things. It's not that hard to roll steel. Yes, it is easy to take a black sweater, drybrush the elevated parts with a light coat of silver paint, apply glitter, and call it chainmail. But, damn, it looks tacky when you see it in use. I guess it would suck to stand around with 40 pounds of armor day after day of shooting, it just breaks me out of the show/movie when I see those damn chainmail sweaters.
I would recommend this series to anyone who likes the original Robin Hood story or fantasy shows/movies (in the fantasy novel sense of the word.) I'm sure that many would even consider it a good general television show, even if your interests don't mesh with the content. I was very happy with picking this one up, and can't wait until the next season hits the shelves, if they made more.
