    was thinking more around 2,500.

Seems like an older man who is less likely to beat on his bike.

    Re: *looking*

VFRs are awesome bikes (I own a '98 VFR800) but take a look at the listed weight, 575 lbs for someone who weighs 130? For a beginner I'd suggest getting something lighter so that when you inevitably drop it in the driveway or a parking lot or wherever, you can get it back upright without much fuss. Also, all of that bodywork is gonna get scratched up when you drop it.

I would seriously recommend getting a cheap naked bike as a first bike. I think avoiding a 250 is a good idea since most people outgrow a 250 so quickly, but an unintimidating 500-600cc bike is a perfect starter bike that you won't be selling off in a year. I know "unintimidating" sounds like "boring" but even the tamest of bikes is still a thrill compared to a car. My roommate has a Suzuki GS500E which is just about the perfect starter bike, I think. The Kawi Ninja 500 is also a good choice.

My first bike was a Nighthawk 750 and I still have it. She's loaded with some nice Givi hard luggage and I use her for grocery runs.

Oh yeah and definitely take the MSF basic rider course if you haven't already.

Oh yeah, the Honda Hawk GT is also a fantastic starter bike (650 twin). It has an oh-so-sexy single-sided swingarm like the VFR you linked to. Maybe this one is close to you?

One additional thing you may want to consider also is seat height. If you have short legs (what is your inseam?) you will probably want to look for a low seat height. For reference, I'm about 5'6" but with short legs (~28-29" inseam) and I obviously cannot flatfoot my VFR which has about a 31.something inch seat height. My first bike, the 91 Honda Nighthawk 750 I mentioned earlier, I dropped about 6 times in the first year just doing stuff like coming to a stop awkwardly, wheeling it out of the garage, parking on inclines incorrectly. Its seat height is 30.9 inches.

that made me laff with a mental picture...

And trey's right, you WILL drop it.. it's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of when.

I wouldn't be so sure aboout that. I've had mine for 21 years and it only
ever fell over once. That was in the side yard of a place I lived in Calgary.

Kick stand sunk into the soft ground over night. I had to replace a signal light
    only.
    I do what I can.
