just because they do not support it does not mean that they do not still hold copyright licensing over it. It will still be illegal to install the OS if you have not purchased a legal license. Downloading the os is fine, but you still need to have the keycode, COA and EULA to make it legal.

Don't be so sure. I seem to remember Atari or someone suing a company that tried to re-package/port old school games a few years ago. They went to court and claimed the games were "abandonware" and that the original company hadn't done anything with them in over 20 years. They lost. Not long after, you started seeing "Retro Game" this and "Classic Arcade" that.

Bottom line, not sure how long copyrights last, but it's certainly much longer than the 8 years since Windows 98 was released.
