Right, but once you register that CD key with a Steam account (a required action if you want to play online), doesn't it stop working for multiplayer, except through the original Steam account?

Uhhh I don't know but I can sell you my Steam account, I have Hl2, DoD:S, CS:S, Red Orchestra, and some others.
