I don't think that's it. I'm really not that picky about earphones or speakers--I usually just get whatever works. But, I hear a world of difference between the onboard sound on my MB and the audigy 4 se, just listening to mp3s in winamp. Using the same headphones, everything sounds richer with the audigy.
