If you get that OEM chip, make sure you grab a decent cooler. I don't think your old one will work. Anyhow, I've been really happy with my dual core Opteron. The benefits in multitasking are huge!

I'm sure you've heard my rants about TigerDirect before... Don't say I didn't warn you.
BTW, NewEgg has a 4400+ in stock for $180: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103542

Re: WTB -- AMD socket 939 processor
Well, the entire issue is moot, since I had ordered the Opteron 185 on Thursday. While I paid a bit more for it than the X2s that are now (suddenly) available, I can take solace in the fact that it is as fast as an FX-60, and is pretty overclockable.

whats wrong with tiger direct? I have bought from them plenty of times and have been very happy with them and thier service. I have been able to return products with no trouble - even when I was the one responsable for screwing them up. for example, i bent a pin on a cpu I ordered from them and was able to exchange it at no cost. I have been able to obtain all rebates from them without trouble.

If there are any enterprising types here, you should buy up as many as possible and resell them on EBay, as they're fetching well over $300 there.

Re: WTB -- AMD socket 939 processor

obviously i am wrong.. but is an opteron 185 better than a 4x00? i have a 4400

Re: WTB -- AMD socket 939 processor
The Sempron was AMD's value priced chip. The Opteron is supposed to be a server part but it is nearly identical to the AMD64 in architecture. It is actually technically superior because it can access mroe memory and it supports more hyper-transport links. I believe your 4400+ has 1MB l2 cache per core so if you were able to bump the clock up from the default 2.2 Ghz to 2.6 Ghz, it would be as fast as the 185. It would probably run a bit hotter at those speeds than the Opty though.
