Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

I just skimmed through the posts, but don't remember seeing anything about OC'in parts.
This is what I was able to do with my computer. Mind you I just replaced the Power Supply and Video Cards. Everything else is over a year old and for the original price I paid (around 1500) I can build 2 systems now.

KD, I have the 9600 SSC editions and now I would have redone my purchase and got 1 8800GTS 512 and picked up a second for SLI when I could have afforded it. Not saying the 96's are something to laugh at..just the 88's series should have been the 96's and vice versa.

If you go to the link, you'll see where I've managed to rank with the 96's. But go to the home page (2nd link) and you'll see the Q66 and 88's still pretty much Reign Supreme.

I must correct my opening statement now and sight Grieg as mentioning OC'in. Sorry for that.

Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

What resolution are you going to be playing at KD? From what I have seen and read the GTS isn't much of a benefit at 1680x1050 and below when compared to the GT. The price difference is fairly steap if your not going to be getting a substatial benefit from it.

1680x1050

hmm... might just get the GT then and save some money.

I was looking at the GTS G92 chipset

I have a 8800gts 512mb. I get very good fps in cod4, 2142, and bf2.

Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

For sure look at the G92 chips instead of the G80, as the G80 is slower then both the new GTS and GT.

The GTS is a great card its just rather steap at the moment for something you may not benefit from. There was some really good deals recently from eVga on the 8800GT, $189 a piece. The going rate for the G92 GTS is $340. You could have been 8800GT SLi for only slightly more then the cost of a GTS. Damn now that I do the math I kind of wish I had thought to do that

Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

Are you XP or Vista Greig? I have heard that vista is a bit rough for SLi support right now?

Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

Vista. It is kind of rough, and don't use the nTune application to change fanspeed to keep them cool. It will crash everything and make you cry. Use Riva Tuner. One thing I found out: going from one card, then adding another isn't quite that simple. Uninstall all drivers, add both cards, boot PC and install drivers from scratch. Existing drivers in Vista didn't pickup the SLI just by popping the card in and adding the bridge.

Also, be prepared to apply a lot of patience getting Riva Tuner setup for SLI profiles. (But it is worth it.)

Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

Wow, nevermind, they've made it easy with Riva Tuner 2.08. Glad I updated it.

Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

Thanks for the info Greig, I was under the impression that vista and sli was much worse then it sounds.

And yes Riva is great, I love the fan profiles, quite when you need it and loud when you want cool temps.

Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

My computer is dying.

My Cable Modem is on its last legs. Have to keep it in front of the AC to keep a connection now.

My HD is making clanking sounds and running slow.

MY Video Card is overheating terribly. I reconfigured everything to give it more airflow. Used Riva to turn the fans on 100% all the time and I still have a baseline temp of over 80 celcius.

Why can't I be rich?

Re: Out for a BIT and need help!

Over 80?! Yeah, thats bad in a serious way. I don't know about the HD, but they can be pretty cheap. 50 to 60 bucks will get you 300GB or so. Check the WD Caviar lineup.

As for video cards, I'd say the 9600 or 8800 would be good replacements. Send me a PM and I'll see what we can do to help out.
