Have you ever considered curing cancer?

For those of you who leave your computers running all day and only game for a few hours there is a program that can run molecular trial and errors on your computer to help find cures for diseases and possibly even cancer!

I have recently become an avid fan of running the Folding@Home software and since its a no cost software what do you have to lose?

Information on this can be found here:

    http://www.tacticalgamer.com/tactica...-research.html

And remember to add the Tactical Gamer team code to get rolled up with the rest of our points (78445).

Currently, Kill Daddy of the 13th is in the lead for members of the CoD4 servers!

Re: Have you ever considered curing cancer?

Hazmat, as much as i want cancer to be cured, as i have lost 4 family members to it.... To me, curing cancer is a giant money scam. Im sure there are a few companies that are trying to find the cure for it.

BUT, if you think about it like this...say someone finds a cure for cancer that comes in a pill form. Just one pill, and it costs say, 150 grand. So one person pays 150 grand and the cancer is gone, just like that.

Although, now there are a ton of operations and procedures that help tame cancer. Im not a doctor so i don't know all the names for those procedures but things like radiation treatment and stuff. I also don't know the prices, but when my Aunt had to do all of these it cost ALOT! She had about 3 years of on going procedures and the medical bills piled up insane.

Lets just say that a few treatments to kill cancer cells is 10000 dollars, and that goes on over a period of say 3 years. And if that person needed that procedure 10 a year, thats 100000 and if that happens 3 times, that's 300,000 dollars right there off of one person.

And if there are hundreds of thousands of people in this world that have cancer, then the hospitals, doctors, the creators of radiation treatment and so on or just ROLLING in the cash because they are getting rich off of others suffering.

Now of course my numbers may not be correct, but im sure that you all get the point. I really really want cancer to be cured as it runs in my family and i am at risk, but i dont see a cure coming soon...As pessimistic as that sounds. Thats just my opinion, its a little out there i know..

Re: Have you ever considered curing cancer?

There has already been radical research done at MIT and at a University in Canada on nanotechnology that has the promise to cure all types of cancer but none of the major drug companies want to fund the research as there is no money in curing cancer. Considering cancer treatments can run thousands of dollars per session, there is much more money in treating cancer than curing it.

-and considering this is essentially a "free" way to contribute to research, which goes dirextly to Stanford, I don't think there's much to lose

My DVR runs Folding@Home in the background 24/7... but I haven't checked it or my stats lately, so maybe I should check them today.

Joe, regardless of how any of us feels about the costs of medical care, the bottom line doesn't change. Cancer research has come A LONG WAY over the years, and maybe a total cure can be found. When I get home tonight, I will look into downloading and running this software. I figure it's not costing me anything to let my computer help out when I'm not using it, and even if each one of our computers only plays a 0.0000000001% part in helping research the disease, every little bit may help. I've already lost a couple family members to cancer, and my Dad has had several scares with different growths recently (luckily no cancer though). Honestly, if there was a real CURE for cancer, it would be priceless in my opinion.

I see you went the other direction with the message header. It was the bait on the line in advertising to get you to read the post. I dont think you did. But regardless Cancer is a disease and diseases can be cured. Even if it at the bio-molecular level and requires some type of genome manipulation.

If you actually go to Stanford's site you can see that they are using shared CPU power to assist with folding genome coding to attempt to locate cures for infectious diseases.

I too have recently lost both sets of grandparents to cancer and those methods to abate the cancer also caused other issues which lead to their painful and prolonged deaths. Blasting cancerous cells with radiation isnt a cure for anything IMO and only raises other issues as witnessed by myself personal and very recently.

Go back take a look at what Stanford is working on with the Folding. And if you like I can change the message title so as not to give this a "new age hippie" vibe.

Hi guys when i get home (away with work again)i will down load the prog but there are other ways to help aswell, when 1 of my wifes students got lukema we all went on the bone marrow donor list unfotunatly no one was a match for grant , but I was called by our blood bank and asked to do what they call match platlet donation. this is where they take some blood use a machine to spin off the plattlets and put the red cells back these platlets are used in the treatment of cancer paitents this dosent cost anything other than time but it is one small thing you can do to help someone with cancer. (sorry about the spelling.)

I used to fold at home before my pc decided to die on me, when I get my new rig I will be folding even faster. Hopefully I will have more than one processor to fold with.

Re: Have you ever considered curing cancer?

Seeing that i have a very dear friend of mine that has been dealing with cancer for almost 8 years now and has been undergoing every treatment that they can get him onto to get rid of it or stop its growth i'll join in on this to help out.

My friend has already lost half his tounge to cancer, he has throat, and lung cancer to go with it. Not to mention Diabeties, and many other ailments to make his life worse. A great man he is, he's the man that got me into FPS shooters, Unreal Tourny #1... was so much fun

The thing is, curing cancer isn't like curing Polio. Cancer will always be around. Unless they come up with injections that constantly keep everything in check, they'll keep making the cure.

I've lost 3 aunts, 2 uncles, 3 grandparents, and quite a few friends to cancer. I support this.

This also isn't just about cancer, it helps with Alzheimer's (something I feel very strongly about), Hunntington's, Mad Cow Disease, ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's Disease) and Parkinson's.

Also, I made it that far running an old Pentium D Dual Core @ 2.66GHz and 2GB of RAM. Imagine what some of your super computers could do

Re: Have you ever considered curing cancer?

Stanford makes a lot of money on tuition anyway I doubt they'll need that much. Plus so many people need to be cured of cancer the demand would be abundant and if the supply is great then the company can make more money by selling it at a lower price to everyone than a higher price to an elite few.
