Language Etiquette
Melee said he was going to start something on this, but looks like he hasn't yet. We had a discussion about how far you can take the language. I've always been under the impression that it was the general consensus that anything that was said on cable TV (with exceptions to certain channels) was allowed to be said here. I.E. FOX? Apparently, FOX takes things a little far now-a-days though. That's what I've always been told anyway.

Re: Language Etiquette
Does the term "Mature" in the TG "Mature Gameing Community" ring any bells for how you "should" be speaking..?
If you wanna sound like a punk, go elsewhere.
There should not even BE a discussion on this...

Re: Language Etiquette
Under the TG FAQ page;
(found here)
I'm guessing this is where Fox came into the topic of language etiquette.All players should hold a professional level of conduct at all time. Please keep your language in the forums and on the server at a professional and mature level. (ie: FOX Television Standards) Play as though you are an example for other players and set a good one. New players will often follow examples set by veteran players, good OR bad.
Also found in the FAQ
Online Gaming (basic rules of conduct)
* No swearing;
* No abusive behaviour;
* No racist, sexist or homophobic behaviour;
* Respect for Tactical Gamer and other members must be maintained at all times;
There's room to have fun with people, cracking jokes and what not, provided it doesn't distract the people playing the game. Aside from that, I think it's pretty straightforward.
It really goes hand-in-hand with how you present yourself in-game (playing as a team, not team killing, not using glitches, etc), like the code of conduct that is bound to those of us who wear the |TG| tag. You treat others how you'd like to be treated, and respect the space of those who don't appreciate certain behaviour. Acting "mature" isn't just about shrugging off things that you find offensive, but being able to comprehend that some people don't appreciate a certain type of behavior, and having the conscience ability to put forth the effort to make those folks comfortable, by holding yourself back and not acting out, being loud, or obnoxious in any way.Last edited by Clodhopper; 10-17-2008 at 04:29 AM. Re: Language Etiquette
This can only be a discussion about reducing the excellent Rules that exist for gaming behaviour on the TG server.
I for one wont incourage any debate on those rules.
If like me you read them before playing/ joining then you know what you are coming into.
These rules have been set based upon experience & good practice.
If anybody has an issue with them then clearly this is not where they should be gaming.
If you use push to talk that is enough time to think about what you are about to say, in my book that is sufficient reason to kick on the first instance of this behaviour ocurring.
If you don't know then you haven't read the rules so I would kick with a reminder to read the rules.
As for text that is even more intentional isn't it so that would get the same treatment from me.
Remember when you log on here you are agreeing to abide by the rules existing.
You break a rule you can expect an admin boot."I like a man who grins when he fights"

Re: Language Etiquette
Most importantly is that kids play on our server. What kind of environment do we want for our kids? The best. Think about that. There is enough danger and bad stuff out there, we don't need that here too. And if that doesn't mean anything to you, go read the rules punk!

Re: Language Etiquette
Trooper posts some great points.
I myself asked the TG staff and the response was pretty much as Delta stated it.
But that was from an admin point of view for not letting things go too far.
When you read the conduct code for online gaming.
There really should be no F this or that. Attacking another player verbally or anything you would do when confronted in person physically.
You try to strive for the best no nonsense person you can be.
To carry across that TG is not just another kiddy playground for more ass hattery.
My personal opinion.

Re: Language Etiquette
Wow, everyone can calm down now...
I jokingly made the comment about starting a thread after console responded to me typing "damn" in response to a blind nade or something. I'm not sure if it was an admin who warned me or an automated script written to respond to certain words, but either way I was surprised such a mild word elicited any type of response.
More than anything I was amused that that word would be found offensive. I figured George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television" were off limits along with some others that are heard quite frequently on TV these days (ex. a-hole).
After three years as an SM at TG most everyone here should have a good idea who I am and how I play. I don't use profanity in game and I always uphold what TG stands for both in game and the forums. That said I also have small children and am sensitive to what language they are exposed to. I don't think that word merited a warning, but if others feel it was too strong, then I will dial it down a notch and use "darn" in the future.|TG|MeleeClear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose!

Re: Language Etiquette
Bottom line here before this gets all blown out. TG has a policy of being mature and we will and need to uphold this policy. It is up to each and everyone of us to see that we maintain a mature behavior due to little ones in and out of game. Kids will jump into daddy's lap, watch him play as well as listen. So lets keep our servers and forums clean. Thanks.

Re: Language Etiquette
You never know what might have been spoken out loud on the admins team at that point in time..so it might not even have been directed at you...or the person who flashed it up might have simply hit the wrong key..I have all mine bound to the "F1, F2" etc keys..so maybe whoever flashed it was trying for the "No Bunnyhopping Please" button but instead got the "No Offensive blah blah blah" button..
But regardless, there have been A LARGE amount of improper words via voice and text both here recently, and the reminders are going to be flashed more and more as our fingers get closer and closer to the kick button..
