Pc rip..
Like I posted in the topic I started about the server 2:
My pc crashed on me.
Did a bios flash that went bad and the darn thing just stopped booting @ the windows loading screen.
After a reinstall of vista all was fine, and stupid as I am I still wanted to try and flash my bios.
Think you can all fill in what happened next..
Again went wrong.
And don't blame me, I used the asus program that came with the bios and it should be a fail save thing to use, at least that's what asus says on the box and on their website.
To make a long story shorter, I am gonna send back my mainboard for a repair, the thing just wont boot, no display, no beebs, nothing.
Calling asus for a replacement bios chip got me a stupid teenager on the phone trough witch I could hear his brain crack when I asked him for the replacement part.
That was a no go, so now I have to RMA my mainboard back the the seller..
Gonna take a while I think..
But I still had my other game pc (the old one) witch with a little tweaking should run cod 4 just fine.
I am almost ashamed to tell you all what happened..
After removing some old programs, turning the thing off and blowing the dust out of the case..
I hit the on switch and blue smoke an a smell of burned silica came out of the case..
So that one is dead as well..
Found a shop nearby that sells out of stock parts, so a replacement for the socket A mainboard is on the shelf there and I am going out to get that shortly.
Hope the problem was the board and nothing else.
If all goes well, witch I don't think seeing the last few days all went wrong, I hope to be back on-line tomorrow for a nice Friday gaming night.

Re: Pc rip..
the really frustrating thing is that the motherbord is an asus.
They advertise all over the internet en the boxes in withc their products come that they use a crash free bios system.
It should restart to defaults if your system crashed due to an overclock mistake.
And most important they have a feature that makes it possible to restore a corrupted bios from an usb stick during start up.
Both failed on my board.
Even resetting the bios using the jumper setting thing they have give you as an extra back-up trick failed.
Well just got back from the store were I gave back the bord, and bought a spare bord just in case.
Nothing fancy no sli option, just one pci-expres slot, but at least now I can put back my new pc and hope that will work.
I am so glad my boss provided me a decent laptop, think I would have gone nuts when I had no internet option left.
And I am glad I did a proper back-up the day before the system died on me, on an other partition of the hdd, seeing I am replacing the motherbord now makes it almost mandatory to reinstall vista again.

Re: Pc rip..
Got the bord in, and my fear came thru I had to reinstall everything again..
The vista back-up I made wednesday night wont work, due to the fact the hardware change is to big for vista..
So again for the 3 time this week, downloading all updates for vista, game updates, installing games, installing latest drivers..

Re: Pc rip..
I had to flash the bios on my M2N32 Pro so that I could enable my scsi controller and had no problem at all and this is with an Ultimate OS.

Re: Pc rip..
I had some problems with updating the drivers for my chip set thats why I first decided to flash the bios.
That went wrong because I used a windows based program (although that program was from asus) with out any warnings what so ever, the thing told me all was okay and that I had to reboot.
After the reboot the pc would just stop on the windows loading screen.
So I did a fresh install off everything and did a bios flash from with in the bios (agian using an asus provided program)
This time all went well..
But after all that I had no sli support, what ever I tried it didn't work, so I decided to go look for a solution on how to flash the bios back to a previous version.
Well I wished I didn't because that really toasted my bord..
Again I used a asus provided program (awdflash) and a correct (but older) bios file for my bord.
While busy doing the flash the program told me the bios file was not a correct file or older than the one all ready installed.
The program then just stopped telling me it wont flash and I had to exit.
That I did and after a restart there was nothing no video signal nothing..
I know its a long story, but I am really pissed that even when using programs provided by asus, that give no error message while flashing the bios, and then to find out nothing boots..ggrrr
Even when you know that asus uses a crashfree bios, witch supposedly should recover a bad bios flash or setup.
NOTHING..!!!
On top of that when replacing a motherboard vista wont start no more..
The XP version of windows had a perfect working repair option on the cd-rom that could fix almost everything (including a complete pc swap).
The version provided on the vista dvd is crap, it can't even remove chipset drivers and install default ones..!!
ggrr..
Well anyway got everything working again, but no sli (the cheap ass motherboard I bought doesn't support sli.
So I hope you'll had a game night planned today, because I did and I don't want to be stuck in an empty server.

Re: Pc rip..
Unfortunately flashing a BIOS is always best done via a floppy disk or a usb drive. Any software, no matter how great, has the potential to fubar the bios flash. I have been lucky and flashed mine without issue because I didn't want to bother with the other option and it was a fresh build so no worries if it didn't work.
I would look into how to flash via a floppy disk or usb and take that asus program out back and shoot it.

Re: Pc rip..
I did use a floppy the second time round.
In the award bios from asus you can use a program called ez flash or something.
That allows you to flash the bios using a dos based program started out of the bios.
About shooting it..
I will save my grief for ingame..

Re: Pc rip..
When you say it just stops at the windows load screen, do you mean that it blue screens there or it literally freezes?
If you're getting a stop code, like 0x00000000 then it is probably a driver or chipset driver you need to load to overcome the issue. Not the BIOS.

Re: Pc rip..
First time it just stopped @ the windows loading screen.
No blue screen nothing.
After the motherboard replacement it just crashed after loading up the bios, and then I mean in the first few seconds after bios loading, normally it gives you the windows loading screen but in my case it just crashed giving a blue screen flash but even before I could make sense of what it was saying it just restarted.
Ending up in a endless loop of restarting and crashing.

Re: Pc rip..
You can disable the reboot option (or at least give yourself a 30 second window) so you have time to copy the error codes. I've had to do this once or twice. Then again you have to have a stable bios to let you make the change.

Re: Pc rip..
ah well it's sorted now.
Only thing that still kinda bothers me is the fact that a vista made back-up image file of a hdd is completely useless when you change a part like the hdd.
I went to the time an trouble to make a image copy of the hdd only to find out that it also wont run or work, and there is no way to get into the image to change the driver settings.
