Squad Leader role
This topic has come up in other threads. We do a pretty good job most nights getting folks to work as a team on offense mostly because the bomb carrier is the SL by default and the fact that we have a decent number of folks willing to give it a go. Defense lacks an SL unless someone tries to coordinate but mostly folks just go where they want regardless. Sometimes that works well but just as often the ad hoc defense gets whittled down pretty easily.
Do folks see a way we can make a defensive SL happen for regular play or do we leave it for scrims and Captain's matches.
Ideas so far - more are welcome:
*Captains' Match style. First bomb carrier leads the whole map. Players that spawn defense pick an SL for the whole map as well. Options might be that you have to lead for one defense then an offense and you could switch. Or switch anytime as long as someone else gets designated.
*2 round minimum. If you spawn defense first round you have to call it and lead the defense then the assault. If you spawn offense and grab the bomb you're obligated to lead the defense next round.
*The easy one. We don't change anything.
If someone is willing to take up the SL responsibility on defense they should expect and get cooperation from their squad. Whether a defensive SL is to become hard coded like the bomb carrier, the key thing for me is what's implementable either via a minor rules mod or a gentlemens agreement for S&D. If it makes more sense to just leave it alone then we will.
CoD5 provides some rudimentary squad tools that we've tried in the past to good effect. We would set up an A team and a B team that covered their respectively lettered objectives on defense then work together to plant on offense. We started the squads and staffed them first round. They definitely worked better if the SLs for a side remained the same for the whole map. We could easily make joining a squad and following the SLs orders part of the CoD5 rules and SOPs.
Does anyone know if CoD6 will continue the SL functionality that was put into CoD5?
The floor is open to anything SL related across the CoD game spectrum and not just the question regarding defensive SL for CoD4. Please be sure to indicate the game version where appropriate.

Re: Squad Leader role
I think the idea to have the offence SL be the same on defense is cool.
defence does need more planning and more communication most of the time.
How ever there is something I wanna add:
I don't think being an SL every few rounds should be mandatory for every one playing in the TG servers.
Some are good planers and some are good followers.
If I speak for my selve I very much dislike to be an SL, I always pick up the bomb if every othere regular in the server has done it for a round and there are only "non regulars" left on our team.
Like I said in another thread, in my work I need to plan everything all week long, week in week out, I leave the responsibility @ work and I don't want it while gaming/relaxing on my free nights.
So my 2 cents:
I like the idea that makes an SL for 2 rounds, both offence and then defence.
Spawning on defence someone needs to call hm sef SL for 2 rounds aswell.
I think it should not be a rule, but more a gentlemans agreement.

Re: Squad Leader role
I don't think it is, or ever has been, or is even being suggested. That would be bedlam

I agree, for now it should be a gentleman's agreement, but if no significant change results, it may be worth legislating.I like the idea that makes an SL for 2 rounds, both offence and then defence.

Re: Squad Leader role
I know I just ike to point out the obivous..
I kinda ment to say that some people just don't like to be SL,
they just like to be the sheep that follow..
I just thought something (yeah even dutch people can think off something other than weed and wooden shoes).
When I play on the TG server it's my night time..
that's right about now till 3 or 4 hours later..
That is USA daytime (more or less)..
meaning there are alot of different players on than the once you guys normaly play with.
Maybe everything is different then and therefor my idea's are totaly useless for you lot..

Re: Squad Leader role
There is absolutely everything to gain from everyone in the server accepting a turn at SL. Not only is that the route to new SL's emerging but it also helps when your just another foot and you understand more what it takes to lead and balance a team.
Besides no good commander leads alone, pick a second and a favorite "sarge" to help and you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Re: Squad Leader role
I think number 2 is the best. Leave the first option for captains matches. I like to see everyone get a chance or at least those who want to. I pick up the bomb a lot but I also back off every now and then and give someone else a chance to come up with a plan.
I will say there are days, every once in a while, whereby I get on and just like DeeJee I just want to play and not have to think about responsibility.... just not that often. Those are the days it's great for others to step up to the plate."The mind stretched to a new concept can never return to it's orginal dimension."

Re: Squad Leader role
weird question, is there anyway to have something for the defense to pick up that makes the SL? like the bomb does on offense, dont know if this is possible or makes sense, but may be cool?

=o Im studying Lord of the Flies in English!
Anyway, i like the idea of the bomb carrier becoming SL for defence the next round aswell. But only as a gentlemans agreement, if someone doesnt like defending for one reason or another, then im sure someone else could step in.
