    Tactics

I would love for the TGU COD4 team to run an advanced assault course or advanced combat course.

I feel that the scrim that we played last night will be the first of many to come, but with that came the amount of people involved. I know that on come cases i split my team up into different fire-teams. With those teams now in place it was a little difficult IMO to coordinate an attack with all the communications going on.

to make stuff short, could we have a TGU class on communications with fire teams?

I would be willing to help with a class, do some grunt work like dig up facts or anything.

    Just a thought

    Re: Tactics

    Yh this would be great!

Fire teams can work really well in COD4 is used correctly, for example flanking a known enemy etc.

If it can be done at a euro-friendly time as well that would be great, I know that's a lot to ask for lol.

    Re: Tactics

I'm hoping we can recruit a TGU instructor from the EU ranks that can provide for that time slot. Any interested parties should PM me.

Here's a snippet from the 13th's forum (cobbed from others here at TG and other sources) on contact reports:

    Contact Report

All military units are trained to use a standard form of radio procedure for reporting encounters with enemy forces. The Contact Report minimizes extraneous radio traffic by creating a clear, concise and common format for reporting enemy activity. Therefore, everyone listening on the radio net understands exactly the nature and scope of the enemy threat. In the virtual world of COD4, soldiers do not use actual military radios, but with VoIP the same methodology can be utilized.

    Format

The Contact Report format quickly provides a squad with the following information:

    *Who is sending the report
    *Location of the enemy
*Estimated strength, type and armament of the enemy
*Apparent intentions of the enemy and/or their direction of travel
*Action the squad member plans to take
*Recommendations the squad member may have, if anything

This report should remain short and to the point to keep VoIP chatter to a minimum.

    Usage

Contact Reports can be abused and over used. They are most useful in a situation where various squad members are geographically separated and
performing individual mission tasks. If the entire squad is in close proximity of each other and everyone sees the same threat, often it's redundant to send a Contact Report, unless the player believes that other squad members cannot see the actual threat. Therefore, information such as compass direction(or landmarks due to lack of compass) and possible enemy intentions might prove useful. The key is for players to use their best judgment in sending a contact report.

For obvious mission critical reasons, Contact Reports are priority radio transmissions. In other words, when players hear the operative word “CONTACT” over VoIP, the entire radio net should go quiet and everyone should listen for the reporting call sign to send his information. After a bit of practice, using this technique becomes almost second nature and makes it much easier to communicate enemy threats. The Contact Report also provides the Squad Leader better command and control capability and improves the overall situational awareness of the entire squad.
You may not live long enough to get out the full report so the most important info should be given first. It's also key to identify yourself and for the team to be aware of their team mates positions at all times. Keep it short and keep the comms to a minimum when you have multiple fire teams and call folks by name.

I agree we all could use some practice in this area. Technically the IHS's should be providing this training to their members already. We don't have a specific TGU course on comms because we cover that topic to varying degrees in EVERY CoD TGU course on the books, as it is that important to your teams success.

    Re: Tactics

an improvement to last nights comms could have been to keep it short and sweet, i know we get alittle sidetracked, i do a lot, but when coordinating a joint attack you need to be able to communicate like when to both blow up the claymores covering the doors
We're not retreating, we're advancing in another direction

Chief, you're spot on. Short and sweet.

Assigning your fire teams names like Red and Blue helps as well to further organize comms.

    Re: Tactics

    This is taken from a post in the GRAW2 SOPs, much like Drona's post;

SOP (Radio) - The Contact Report

How many times has everyone heard the following type of conversation over TeamSpeak?

Unknown voice over TeamSpeak says: "Uhhh....there's some guys in the woods over there... uhhhh... they're coming this way now .... uhhh... I don't think they see me yet... uhhhh ... should I shoot them?"

.......then silence, followed by a message on your own chat computer screen saying, "Bravo is down."

Obviously, there's a lot of missing information about the enemy threat, such as .... who was the friendly call sign that engaged, what type of enemy, where are they, what appears to be their intentions, and what are you doing about it? The rest of the fire team are left in the dark to draw their own conclusions as to the impact on the mission and what they should do next. All in all, this is not a workable solution for any real life special forces team.

All military units are trained to use a standard NATO form of radio procedure for reporting encounters with enemy forces. The reason for standardizing the format for contact reporting is to minimize extraneous radio traffic by creating a clear and concise common approach. Therefore, everyone listening on the radio net understands exactly the nature and scope of the enemy threat. In our virtual Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter world we don’t use actual military radios, but with TeamSpeak, virtually the same methodology can be utilized.

Let's use the example from above and send a proper Contact Report using Mirfee reporting to Player, who is the Team Leader.

Example with fire team under Fire Condition RED:

Unknown voice over TeamSpeak says: "Leader, this is Mirfee, CONTACT, Grid Reference A9, lightly armed enemy infantry in patrol strength, moving northeast through woods, threat imminent, am observing."

Player says over TeamSpeak: "Mirfee, this is Leader, ENGAGE, team disperse, go GREEN."

Mirfee responds by typing "cc." This results in Player seeing on his chat screen the words "Mirfee: cc", which gives him direct confirmation that Mirfee has received and understood his transmission.

Note: Refer to SOP (Radio) - Phonetic Alphabet for details on pronouncing grid references over radio net.

Note: Refer to SOP (Radio) - "cc" for details on use of radio acknowledgments.

Note: Refer to SOP (Tactics) - Fire Discipline for details on use of GREEN/YELLOW/RED RoE.

The form of the Contact Report answers the following questions:

    1. Who is sending the report?
    2. Where are the enemy?
    3. What is their estimated strength, type, and armament?
    4. What appears to be their intentions and/or direction of travel?
    5. What are you doing about them?
    6. What are your recommendations?

Note: Contact Reports can be abused and over used. They're most useful in a situation where various fire teams are geographically separated performing individual mission tasks. If the entire 12-man fire team is geographically on the same ground and everyone sees the same threat, often it's redundant to send a Contact Report, except if you believe that other team members can't see the actual threat. Therefore, information such as Grid References and possible enemy intentions might prove useful. The key is to use one's own best judgment. It should be noted that if there was a higher command structure above the 12-man GRAW team we play in this game, then even if the team were all together, the Team Leader would send a proper radio Contact Report to that higher authority regardless.

Note: For obvious mission critical reasons, Contact Reports are classified as Priority radio transmissions. In other words, when you hear the operative word Contact over TeamSpeak, the entire radio net should go quiet and listen for the reporting call sign to send his information. Often in real life Contact Reports, one hears the phrase "Leader, this is Mirfee, CONTACT... Wait ... Out." It usually causes the radio net to go silent waiting for the sending call sign to come back on the air and send the full report. It's a good way of getting the net cleared while the sender examines his maps (checking Grid References) and prepares to send a full report.

After a bit of practice using this technique, it becomes almost second nature and makes it much easier to communicate enemy threats, providing the Team Leader better command and control capability, plus improving the overall SA (situational awareness) of the entire fire team. We would encourage all players on any Tactical Gamer Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter server to utilize this standard NATO SOP methodology for Contact Reports as much as possible.

Even though it's a different game, a lot of the SOP's there can help in COD4 aswell. Other useful messages -

Aw, c'mon Extinct, that's not the mentality we're looking for.
