Situational Awareness
Jack brought up a good point in another post which got me thinking about the whole aspect of the game. I believe we all need to be a little more aware of what is going on when we're playing if we want to be successful at defending. Here's some examples:
1) Be patient. If you are constantly running around, it's a lot easier for the offense to see a moving object. They will make their way to a bombsite so just sit tight until you're needed somewhere else.
2) It's been tested before that it is more successful to stick around a bombsite than go hunting or see how far forward you can be. The phrase "curiosity killed the cat" applies.
3) Now this one is a pet peave of mine. Before you go planting a claymore, make sure it's not going to detonate another clay. 5 claymores within a square foot is no more potent than a single clay. There's no need to domino the clays.
4) Always be aware of what team you are on, especially on server 2. One tk could be the difference in the game. We've all killed a teammate before, and with smoke and other obstructions that make the tags not pop up, the best way to know who to shoot is knowing what your team looks like. I'm guilty of it, but I'm trying to be a lot better about realizing the differences.
5) Prone, crouch, make as little noise as possible. Dead silence is great but you still make a small amount of noise. One person who makes a little pitter patter can ruin a great plan and kill your entire team.

Re: Situational Awareness
To be honest 1 clay can cover 10 different approaches at once, if you simply plant it at a choke point where a player on the offense would have to blow it to pass(especially since everyone on offense usually has Bomb Squad). That leaves you able to cover various different approaches while being aware that you have safely guarded your flank and the flanks of your teammates.
Also top notch post, I hope this post grows with more informative ideas about Situational Awareness. It is the single most important part of your game play.
For now I am off for about 2 weeks. Have fun out there.

Re: Situational Awareness
I think a number of people could learn from the first point. When at a stand off in a doorway, don't just walk out and try to kill them... tell your team the situation and wait it out.

Re: Situational Awareness
I'd like to add to point 1 that if the defense all sit still, it also means that the defenders can shoot anything that moves, without having to take that split second to ID it, because they'll know all their teammates are patient little bunnies who aren't running back and forth in their field of fire.

Or if you are going to cross someone or change position, call it out and wait for confirmation if you can.

Re: Situational Awareness
you should also call out if your teammate is in you line of fire. a lot of times people will stack up and one will be crouched. make sure you say that your fireing over their shoulder!.
another one that i like to do is stealth!!! remember that the difference between the element of surpise and triping the all alert is only a footstep! TAKE YOUR TIME
