Exclamation Call of Duty: Call for Input

With the MW2 debacle currently going on and the very likelihood of it being dead before it ever released (as far as it being supported here in the TG community), we are left wondering what now?

I now I've been out of action for quite a while now, but I've come back to empty servers (save for 2 or 3 nights per week). What can be done to change this?

Basically what I am asking is this:

What would we all, as players, like to see on our servers that would make us want to play more?

    Thoughts? Ideas?

There has been a ton of talk on this subject over the past couple of month, you may want to dig some of them up and read the, but not sure.. there has also been a lot of talk about it in the admin forums with no real consensus on why or what to do about it.

I know Drona has been working hard to try new things, we have lately tried playing on other communities in order to get them to play with us, mixed mode monday is an attempt to bring in new people as well.

I am sure Drona is open to any new ideas as well, just not sure what else can be done.

Great question KD. We had a plan for server realignment based on MW2 coming out, but that is all up in the air now based on the recent news.

Server 1 is basically dead. We could try a mixed mode, custom map rotation on it 24/7 with OWP set very close to regular Hardcore or use the BFCL settings and rotation so folks that are in the competition can get games going any time they like.

I'm always open to suggestions on how we can improve things and draw more folks to TG so folks should definitely speak up if they have ideas.

Let's use this thread for CoD4 only and please see KD's other thread for WaW suggestions.

Re: Call of Duty: Call for Input

    Hello All,

I really do think I have a fix for server 1. We switch it to 36 player HC Vanilla, no mod. We run the same rules as every other decent tactical server out there.

No nades first 20 secs (except Smoke)
Must use sights at all times when shooting
    No Marty or Last Stand
No spaming of anything without uniform contact and you are only allowed a few rounds then.
No standing anywhere you could not in real life
No blind nades, unless room clearing and you must follow immediately after.
Admins follow the TG way (Educate, Warn {Educate More}, Kick {Educate More}, and Ban if we must)
Allow spectate mode after a player dies (Not free Cam) This means all of your regulars turn into Junior Admins and help educate the new players.

This server is our 'Farm'. It is our Bread and Butter. We use it to find new Community members and to train our players and our admins for our modded servers. We advertise constantly for the players to try the modded servers and have our regulars promote the modded server. We have tournaments where members can win recognition for communication and teamwork and not necessarily score. For many players this is their first glimpse of what tactical means and while these rules are not up to standard TG mods you might consider them a step toward becoming TG. The battlefield series here at TG is very popular and the server is always full and the reason is because of this consistancy. Don't tweak your main server. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Hundreds, even thousands of our members started with us in just this fashion and we here in the COD4 area have lost sight of that.

On our modded server, stay away from things like adjusting how much a person can run. Our players are big boys and girls and in real life soldiers can and often do run. Sprinting across an open area to get to cover is not only as tactical as it comes, it is a wise practice. Just because you can tweak something does not mean you SHOULD. The game must be realistic, but always in the back of you mind you must remember that it IS still only a game and if you take away the parts that make it fun, the players will drift away. We have rules against Running and Gunning and lone wolfing on our modded server that should be enough. Putting limits on how far they can run or how high they can jump is just too control freaky.

The statement, "In real life a soldier would not be permitted to. . ." is dangerous for two reasons. This is NOT real life and these are NOT real soldiers. It is a game meant for fun and entertainment. I swear some of you tweakers are working on ways to develop a gaming chair that will actually damage players as they get hit in game! (You are aren't you?)

Whenever a new game title comes out, it is my advice to leave the base game unaltered to attract new players and, more importantly, new community members. Make up and enforce a handfull of rules to make it more tactical and then make your mods to make it even more tactical, but do not attack the basic mechanics that the people are used to. (Running, Jumping, Walking Upright) Instead, concentrate on things like moving the bomb sites, enlarging the maps or play areas, adding new weapons, or even tweaking down really broken weapons (P90). The rest of our mods should be a more advanced ruleset for the modded servers. Players held to higher standards. Now by more advanced I don;t mean we should go crazy, if you have more than ten or so rules it is too many and you need to look at streamlining it a bit. This saves on your admins too. Remember an admins greatest fall back is that if anyone is ruining gameplay for ANY reason, that player can still face a kick or ban.

On server one Promote and Encourage Communication! (Discourage lone wolfing and not communicating)

On server two (modded) Enforce Communication! (warn and kick for lone wolfing and not communicating)

These are just examples and samples from the gaming world but I really believe if we back off a little and go back to the basics for server one, things will turn around for this title and help us for future endeavors. The servers that are run this way are ALWAYS full and they are still Tactical, just not Tactical Extreme. (Diet Tactical?)

    What do you think?

The rules on server one are currently looser than what's stated here. And it is empty all the time.

I disagree with your recommendation to not modify how fast players can move. You say you the underlying purpose is to have fun, but fun is subjective, and I personally have more fun when movement speed is restricted.

Is the server ranked? This is key fo many many players. Is the server unlocked? LOL!?! It has been password protected for DAYS and therefore NO ONE CAN use it!!!!!!!

I have been idling in the Modded server for the last three hours alone. I can not get into the other server!

I am telling you Ranked Vanilla is the way to go.

There is no certain way to go. This is why we have a modded server as well as a stock server. If you prefer stock by all means join that server and seed it. Going with the argument
stock versus modded is like trying to argue PC vs console. There is no wrong or right answer its all about personal preference. If you look right now at the whole MW2 issues people are mad that there will not be modded servers that should tell you that people do like modded servers, Just as some people like stock.

Server 1 is indeed passworded and voice has been deactivated. Is it still set up with the BFCL configs?

Thanks for alerting us. That was my bad. I didn't swap the regular server config back in after the BFCL match. Sorry for the inconvenience. It's back to ranked hardcore S&D, stock maps, no mod. That's pretty much how it's been for the summer.

What exactly would you like to see that's different from server 1 now other than an increased player count? Mixed mode?

Re: Call of Duty: Call for Input

Based on all of our COD experience, instead of listing what has dragged down our server and what we dont like, list what we like in gameplay etc.

    When I play I like;
    1. Access to all weapons/perks, if they are in the game, lets use them
    2. I like the current boundary rules. Defense owns that map, be prepared. But also SL's work to keep a good defense/team formation. Not run and kill lonewold style, but not limited to a certain pre-defined area
    3. I like comms and planning
    4. I like a wide variety of maps, the more the better, new maps as often as possible
    5. I like consistant rules that we can admin and teach with a clear/unified understanding

dont respond to what I like, post what you like, then we can go from there

Re: Call of Duty: Call for Input

I think Loraxe makes some good points about drawing in new players to our servers, but I also think that this is how Server 1 was prior to Server 2 gaining popularity. What drew players to Server 1 was that it was consistently populated with our regular players who did a good job of welcoming new players which caused them to return and become regulars themselves. Unfortunately, over time the regulars grew tired of Server 1 and wanted something different which led to Server 2's growth at the expense of Server1. This coupled with the general decline in people playing the game led to Server 1 being vacant more and more. I think it's a natural progression that is seen with many popular titles.

As for me, I hardly play here at all because by the time I get on at night (9:00 PST), both servers are empty. A year ago Server 1 would be populated for at least another hour, but the title is just dying out. I had expected MW2 to revitalize the community, but who knows if IW (re:Activision) is going to change course.

    As for me, I like:
    1. Access to all weapons and perks, with the exception of martyr and last stand.
    2. I think I like the current boundary rules, unless they changed recently. The defense should be allowed some freedom, but not complete access to hunt down the attackers.
    3. I love comms. Planning is ideal, but hard to with little time and knowing the defense is pushing up as far as possible.
    4. A wide variety of maps is ideal. As is some variety of gameplay. S&D 24/7 can get old. It's fun to play TDM on some of the mod maps - new and exciting. As is HQ, CTF and sabotage. The problem with the stock maps is we've all played them 100's of times and everyone knows every nook and cranny.
    5. I like consistent rules, too. More than that I like our admins - they keep TG what is supposed to be.
