Radiant is a huge headache.

So I started reading on the wiki last night again, but actually kept on with it. After reading the "Radiant Basics" 30 times, I was finally able to make a room, it took me over two hours to make this. I hope it gets easier as you keep at it. This program is tough.

Maybe Size 12.5 could help me out, give me some pointers. The terrain section is pretty tough for me, I tried to follow the directions as stated in the IW Wiki, but it was not turning out the same way, I think they are leaving out small details, and its messing me up.

I'm going to keep at it, and hopefully one day have a map the size of shipment..hehe.

This leads me to believe that Shipment was the first map created by the developers, lol.

I'm sure once you get the hang of it, its a cake walk. Kinda like it was when I first started using Photoshop. Once you get it down, much easier to manipulate. It's just the interface is so overwhelming, and the camera control is not very intuitive like other map editors.

Re: Radiant is a huge headache.

Are there any decent beginner tutorials out there? Undead is this your first time trying to make a map? If it took you 2 hours to build a room, then it would probably take me 3 hours just to put up a tree.

I know about the IW wiki site, and here's some tutorials from modsonline.
http://www.modsonline.com/Tutorials-list-17.html

But where do I start out from the very beginning?

I started under Radiant Basics, and went from there.

Re: Radiant is a huge headache.

Oh yeah. It was a freakin' nightmare right from the beginning. I actually printed out all of the pages in the Wiki. Rather than surf from page to page looking for info, it was much easier to look through a 3 ring binder and make notes on the pages as well. The forums are VERY helpful. Modsonline is great as mentioned. There are also some nice video tutorials on that site, I wish I had watched those from the beginning.

Don't get too overwhelmed though. I'm able to whip out large buildings now at a fairly fast pace. If you are making houses/walls/buildings from scratch, make sure and do it in a new map screen. Save it. Then load it into your main map as a prefab. You can then place as many in the map as you want without having to remake it over and over again.

I've probably spent 10hrs. or more just looking for info on how to do stuff. Frustrating, but well worth it when the map is done.

By the way, I'm still working on my map. I've added tunnels, two huge towers with a walkway between them (way up in the air) and fixed the problems you guys mentioned before. I'll be working on it for probably another couple of weeks. I'm buying a house so my time is becoming limited with getting ready to move.

Good luck.

Right now the issue I'm having with terrain, is when I do simple/patch, the whole thing turns into a gradient looking texture, and I cannot figure out how to get it to display the texture on the terrain. I'm looking directly at the wiki, and following the steps, but mines turning into gradient, and whats being displayed on the IW's wiki is still showing the grass texture.

Re: Radiant is a huge headache.

Managed to make a crappy skybox, and compile my room. Just a pure rough draft.

Re: Radiant is a huge headache.

Why is it I can't run the single player map at all? Every time I do, I get the error that I don't have the correct DVD rom disc in my drive, which in fact I do, which is very bizarre.

Also after following the video tutorial the MP map worked, however my character's weapon has the rainbow color to it. But I did manage to create a room, so I got as far as Undead has on the map making skills. Making rooms and whatnot seems pretty easy, it's just adding all the detail to it that would seem to take the longest, if one were to attempt to create a quality map.

Re: Radiant is a huge headache.

In your room, you need to create a reflection probe, right click on the 2D grid, and add a reflection probe. It should take care of that rainbow effect.

That didn't work. Does it matter where the reflection probe is in the room?

Does this error I'm getting with the vision file have anything to do with it?

And here's the layout in Radiant. Also I inserted 3 different colored lights, but those don't really show up in the room either as you can see. Would that have anything to do with it?

I'm getting frustrated.

Re: Radiant is a huge headache.

I'd place another one, or just move the current one to the center of the room.

And are you compiling in the correct order?

Compile BSP...
Compile Reflections..this one takes awhile sometimes, and it will close the game out when its finished.
Build fast file next,
then zone file, which you may need to copy over some of the items its displaying.

Re: Radiant is a huge headache.

Yes I'm compiling in the correct order. Now when you do the first one, Compile BSP, the window just hangs on the "Connecting Paths" part while the game is open. Am I supposed to close the game down or let that part run for awhile? I always close it down, and then the windows tells me to hit any key to continue. For me the compile reflections part only takes around 10 seconds. Also when I update the zone file, why is it telling me I'm still missing some assets when they're already on the right hand side? When I go to Build Fast File, it gives me an error for each of those files saying it can't load them.

Now I just tried a new map with the same results. At least the lighting works but why is my gun still rainbow? Maybe Birdie is right about the "gaymaker" smack.
