Actually it's the other way around, since the MP44/StG44 came first. It was the first true assault rifle.

The MP44 weighs about 12 pounds and fires the 7.92x33mm (7.92mm Kurz) round, which is a shortened version of the full-power 7.92x57mm round. The MP44 was designed to fire an intermediate round while being controllable in full-auto fire.

The 7.92x33mm round is actually shorter than the round fired by the AK-47 (7.62x39mm), but the bullet is a little bigger in diameter. To give you an idea of what the 7.92x33mm round looks like compared to other well-known rounds, check out this picture. At the far left is the 7.92x33mm round, and to its immediate right is the 7.62x39mm round that the AK-47 fires. Next is the 5.45x39mm round, which is what the AK-74 fires. Next is the 7.62x51mm round, which is what the M-14, M-60, and M-240 fire. Next is the .223 round, which is the SAAMI-spec version of the next round -- the 5.56x45mm round fired by the M-16 and M-249. Last is the 6x45mm SAW round that was developed for U.S. SAW trials.
