Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
Then why not delete only the pasted content and leave the accompanying link with a warning for anyone whose sensitivities may be affected?
Here is the article in question.
Warning: May contain a naughty reference.
P.Drona, silently deleting someone's post without telling them directly is in my opinion very rude. If you want to encourage communication within your parameters, then I believe you owe it to the people you decide to censor that you're doing so.
Excuse me if I'm a bit touchy about the subject, but the mods on this forum have a long history of silently and retrospectively deleting large swathes of content researched and contributed by its members. I'm just positing that it's good practice to communicate with forum contributors when you decide to edit content they make an effort to write. Especially when that contributor is a loyal, long standing member of the community like jmaker.

Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
I see why you guys left Bommando.
Again, I really don't think anything in that post was offensive, according to to this.

If the standards are "Prime Time TV" and anything posted is inappropriate for teenagers then yes I would agree.....back in 1960.
Any teenager in America would not be offended by that post. One word was already self-censored. Wow, what a horrendous oversight on my end.
If you need to delete it fine, just do what Bommando suggested and edit the thing before deleting the whole post outright. I guess that's what shocked me more than anything. Lighten up P. I'm here to help, not hurt.|TG-12th| jmaker

Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
Here's the relevant quote from the policy.
Using "***" to mask swear content is not self censoring. If anyone has issues with this, please PM me so we can keep the thread on track.Using some method to skirt the standards is not an acceptable form of posting either. If you use some 4 letter word and you decide to put a space between the letters, it will be looked on as blatant disregard for our collective rules and you will be punished harshly. If you simply type in the word and it gets “filtered “, you are also wrong. The basic list for filtered words is very common; we all know what they are. Now the argument that is best is typing “****”, where technically the filter did not catch it simply because you used asterisks instead of any real word. Now if we can easily determine that it is intended to be a swear content, you will be given an infraction all the same.

i think he was trying to prove a point, very bad point, but a good one too. also the deletion of an entire post seems a little over the top to me but im not the one in charge.Last edited by Jack Bauer; 10-24-2009 at 05:03 PM. Reason: re-read and posted some more

Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
Wow... I just been reading all the posts on a few threads. I'm kind of relieved, actually. While I don't play as much as I had been, I was bummed that your servers might empty for a new game that I wasn't planning on buying til I upgraded my unit. Selfish me....It is amazing that they would ostracize an entire segment of their fans. Really silly business practices.
I wonder if they get hit in the wallets, will they rethink their mistake and change their minds?

Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
I think the bigger question is: does the number of people that the boycott has constitute a revenue loss significant enough to hurt them? We have no idea how many of the signers will still buy the game, or buy the game even if it has been made clear that servers will not be returned to the game.

Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
If I remember CoD3 didn't make it to PC and then 4 surpassed 14 million in sales with over 20,000 servers supporting its title and they want to take it back to console. I thought they would have learned something from the different successes of those ventures. But, I for one will purchase nothing under the Activision label and will suspend all purchase of console games until this is resolved.

Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
Remember, CoD3 is Treyarch, not Infinity Ward and so not 100% comparable. It scored on average 10 points lower than CoD4 on metacritic. I'm not taking a dig at Treyarch, but I don't think Activision or anyone else expect their games to sell as well as IW's.
Also, since I don't think I've mentioned it yet, I won't be buying MW2 without dedicated server support (and probably mod tools)

Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
I think it's more down to IW than Activision. Activision are the ones who made IW start making the CoD series on PC, IW didn't even want to make CoD2 for PC, only consoles.

Re: Dedicated Servers Discusion
I think bigger factors are at play...
What kind of support are they receiving from the consol game makers to keep the play this way? , hence driving the market in there direction…, this is a prime market for them, a twitch shooter….
All we have to do is wait till march 2010 for BF: Bad Company2 because today I read this….
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6238148.html
So we do not Need MW2 we will have this……
"Since Battlefield 1942, DICE has used dedicated servers for all platforms," the developer wrote on its Web site this week. "This formula has worked well, and still works well, for us and for the gaming community. We have stayed true to this practice and will continue this tradition into the upcoming title Battlefield: Bad Company 2."
As noted by DICE, Battlefield: Bad Company 2's online servers will be hosted by a variety of a datacenters in locations throughout the world that players can rent space from. Accordingly, server owners will be afforded admin control over their rented space, "allowing you to manage your server, your way." Players will also be able to earn ranks and rewards on dedicated servers, and they will also be covered by anti-cheat software.
The sequel to last year's well-regarded new expansion of EA DICE's shooter franchise, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on March 2. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage."
