In theory if done right it can be useful I agree, I think its best to shoot for a few seconds take cover and either relocate or again suppress, however once the enemy has you figured out its time to skedaddle most rikki tikk.

Indeed. But why move? Its the point of suppresive fire to Suppress, or distract the enemy at least, (for those not so good at SF)

Yeah but since most maps are within throwing distance of a grenade at you its better to walk away and fight another day. Your no good to the team dead. Plus sometimes I may pack a 203 or GP40 if I see too many LMGs roaming around. Generally when you lay down suppresive fire you may need to expose yourself leaving yourself open to be a tastey target. Then again it is ruin to run from a fight. It just depends on where you are at the time of the action really. You should be able to make that decision at the right time.
