Fix for Chat in center of screen
I posted this to the A+ forums. Hope it helps!
Has anyone else gotten killed in game because of the chat text that spans halfway across the screen? Well, I may have found a solution to this problem. Whilst looking through the forums at www.callofduty.com, I found a post talking about a console command that will move the chat to the top of the screen and out of the way. The post states that you have to enter the command every round to get it to work. That sounds like too much damn work to me, so I set up to find the mp config file. I found it at:
Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Activision\CoDWaW\players\profiles\Mindkill
Of course, you will have to replace "Mindkill" with the name of your profile. Once you have navigated to the above mentioned location, open the file "config_mp.cfg with Wordpad and find the entry seta cg_hudChatPosition "5 200". Then, simply change the 200 to 50, save the file, and have fun.
btw - I am running XP 64bit, so I do not know if the file locations will be the same on Vista. Perhaps one of you Vista whores can do a bit of leg work and check that out for me.
***EDIT***
I also found in the above mentioned file the commands seta waypointIconHeight "20" and seta waypointIconWidth "20". I don't remember what the default value is, but the one I set is 20. These commands set the size of the objective icons in-game. A size of 20 makes the icons considerably smaller so they are not in the way and blocking your view all of the time, yet, keeps them big enough so that they can still be seen and read.
Enjoy!

Re: Fix for Chat in center of screen
Meh.. for some reason the cfg file that you edit to move the chat text gets over written each time you start the game apparently. So, you will have to make the cfg file "Read Only". To do so, simply right click the file, click Properties, then tick the "Read Only" box. Click OK. That should do it.
*crosses fingers and hopes like hell this works*

Re: Fix for Chat in center of screen
Bleh.. so disappointed. My fix doesn't seem to stay for some reason. I've looked everywhere for another config file that might be changing the setting back, but so far have had no luck.
The only way I have found to reliably get the chat text out of the way is to type into the console:
Then, when the chat text moves its happy little butt back in the way, just hit ~, up arrow, ENTER, ~. Or, I guess you could make a key bind.. but I haven't tried that yet.Code:seta cg_hudChatPosition 5 50
Anyways, I will keep looking around for a more permanent fix.
*wanders back off to google, cursing Activision and Treyarch*
***EDIT***
Well, the bind works. Open your config_mp.cfg file (remove the Read-Only attribute first) with WordPad and enter the following:
Then, whenever the text is in the way, you can hit F5 to move it to the top.Code:bind F5 "seta cg_hudChatPosition 5 50"
Something I noticed (and I have not really tested this yet) is that every time I see a server sent message in the expanded console (Shift + ~), it says that it couldn't overwrite the cfg file. Which, of course, is to be expected since mine is Read-Only... but why is the game trying to write to that config file if I have changed nothing on my end?
I am starting to think it's just broke and we will have to wait for a real fix by the game developers. Anyways, I tried and came up lacking. Thanks for bearing with me as I stumbled down this road. We now return you to your regularly scheduled gameplay.Last edited by Mindkill; 11-24-2008 at 04:39 PM.

Re: Fix for Chat in center of screen
Well, after conferring with a fellow [A+] member, we finally have it narrowed down on how to fix the text in the center of the screen. Delete the file mpdata. The good news is that it really works. The bad news is that you lose all of your ranks and unlocks.
Now, I just have to find a program that can read that file to see if the problem can be fixed gracefully instead of bludgeoned into submission.
Also, it would appear that only the Beta players are having this problem. No idea why the retail release would use a fudged file from a beta.

Re: Fix for Chat in center of screen
Can't you save your profile "as is" with the backup program that bubba posted about and then delete the entire game as well as saved games and system registry COD5 crap. Reinstall fresh and then use your backup profile to be right where you started.
Basically, making your computer think it never had the beta version?

Re: Fix for Chat in center of screen
I dunno if that will work or not. At least I haven't tried it yet. But, from what I have seen, the people that played the beta seem to be SOL. The mpdata file stores all of the ranks and unlocks and stuff. It also has something to do with some of the weird problems. So, if you back everything up, do a reinstall, then replace the new files with your backup, you will still have the same problem. At least thats the way my brain is deciphering all this.
I actually renamed my mpdata, then started the game up and it made me a new file. Complete with no rank and no goodies. As soon as I put my backed up file back, I went back to having the same problems.
So, unless any of you having this problem want to start over in rank, the following is my best suggestion:
In your config_mp.cfg find the bind that looks like:
and make it look like:Code:bind W "+forward"
Doing this will reset the chat position every time you press your move forward key. I know, it's not great, but at least it seems to work.Code:bind W "+forward;seta cg_hudChatPosition 5 50"
*shakes fist at Treyarch*
ps sorry to get anyones hopes up with my futile fight against the machine.
