    2142 ----> waw?

    So, 2142 has now become unplayable on my machine. At first I thought it was my machine, but when I loaded up SWBFII it ran smooth as butta. Both games were released within a year of each other. So, after trying several fixes (including reloading my OS as XP SP1) I loaded up BF2 and had the same issues with graphic stuttering, especially if there was any sound nearby. It could be my Realtek sound card, but then again maybe not.

    The sad thing is that before 2008, 2142 ran at 1920x1200 fine on my machine (yes I forced resolution) or at 1600, both at 50fps. Now, it's unplayable on the same damn machine throughout 2008 and into 2009. My specs are dual 3.2 ghz processors (that's dual processors on two sockets, not dual core), 256 MB NVidia Geforce go6800, and 2gb of ram, not to mention a 7200 rpm hard drive.

    I'm giving the big finger to EA, and never buying another product that uses their engines again which is sad because I love BF2142 and was even looking forward to purchasing BF2. No more.

    I'm looking for a game that gave me as much enjoyment as 2142 did. What I loved about it was the balance between Armor and Infantry, the reward for Squad based play, and victory based on solid tactical decisions on the battlefield vs. pure twitch play (not that I'm a bad twitch player.) I also enjoyed the sniping, even though it was less effective in this game vs. other FPS games, thanks to overpowered rocket humping zombie medics. (FYI, whenever I played assault, it was as a Baur-shotty toting sharpshooting medic, rockets are for lame-o's.)

    So, my question is, based on all that is good about 2142, would I find the same experience in WAW? Thanks so much.

    IMHO it would play at a much lower resolution than you probably want to use. My guess is that for you, on that machine, WaW will not be considered "playable" in the least. I would not waste money on the game until you have upgraded considerably.

    What part would make it unplayable? I have dual P4 3.2 ghz processors, not one. The only sticking point I can see would be the graphics card, which is just above minimum (minimum being a 6600, whereas I have a 6800.)

    This is on a notebook computer with a native resolution of 1900x1200.

    It could be weak 12v rail to the gpu, some graphics and audio drivers haven't worked well together for me, or a registry in need of some tlc. The dual processors are great (esp. if you can enable hyperthreading), my first game rig I built using the Northwood 3.2 P4 and it still handles Doom, Quake, CS:S just fine. I found a dirX10 agp card that I'm thinking of picking up just to see what its capable of playing. I wouldn't give up yet but then I don't pass up a chance to upgrade.

    I can't comment on your hardware.

    With regard to WAW, the squad functions consist of:

    -The ability to form a squad and invite people to it.

    -The ability of the SL to place a single attack icon on the map.

    -Squad members tags are blue vs. green

    -Squad members names appear on your map

    -Depending on the map and who holds what portions, in respawn modes, you might spawn at a spawn point in the vicinity of your SL - Virtually no documentation available on this function or the weightings used to select the spawn point.

    -VOIP: there are no separate squad channels. Everyone shares one big channel.

    -Sniping is way cooler than 2142. Also, we play Hardcore mode with no hud, crosshairs or minimap and health is set much less than stock so the weps actually do some major damage.

    So, I downloaded COD Modern Combat, and it ran smoooooth at 1600x1200. Compare this to BF2142 and BF2, which I can't even run at 600x800 at the lowest settings without stuttering. From what I've read, COD Modern Combat has the exact same engine as COD WAW.
