Free Spectate?
Hey everyone.
I have been meaning to ask this in the form of a poll for a while now, but kept forgetting. How would you all feel about changing the spectate mode from team to free?
If you don't mind, please follow up your vote with a post letting us know your opinion and concerns.
Thanks!

Re: Free Spectate?
Free spectate in the past was a problem. People were using it to see where they were shot from and such. Also it was used to communicate to the living players. I for one see no added benefit to having free spectate on.

Re: Free Spectate?
I would really like free spectate turned on.
I just like the ability to check out the strategies being employed by both teams from a position not possible while ingame. When you can realize that the route you took is not the ideal scenario because it covers too much distance and an enemy can easily cover that area. But my favorite is to watch two enemies meet at a corner from a different perspective rather than eye level makes it a great option to have.
Cons:
Well some people will abuse the feature to gain an advantage over the other team. I would like to believe that no one who regularly plays on the server would ever do this.
In closing I would just like to say that while we do our most to play this game very competitively we are not professional gamers who do what needs to be done to win. We are not just a group of mature gamers. We do have great level of sportmanship and are of a good enough character that we can use various game enhancing features without detrimental aftereffects.

Re: Free Spectate?
could we get it enabled for admins to spec players to help educate them?

Re: Free Spectate?
I voted yes on enabling free spectate because it is a great educational tool. And, its a great educational tool for the first reason Bubba posted about. Looking for who shot you and where from. This may sound bad to begin with but, think of it this way: Can you have fun, day after day, owning the same person from the same spot? I know I couldn't. That would get pretty repetative and boring really fast.
Why not allow "less skilled" players to see where the good spots are, so they can get better at the game. Which, in turn, raises the level of everyones play and leads to much more tactical and immersive game play on the server. Not to mention, since we are getting more custom maps, there is no better way to learn them, than to fly though it after you have died.
Now, I an pretty sure that free spectate has been enabled on at least one of the CoD4 servers (probably both) for as long as I have played here. I don't recall any serious issues with it. Kill cam on the other hand, caused all kinds of stink. Pity too.. Kill cam is an even more useful tool, if used properly.
As far as ghosting goes, yes, that can happen. But, since we are talking about the SOG modded WaW server with a very small player base, I don't see it as an issue. Most of the playerbase is made up of one TG GO, TG admins, SM's and regulars that have migrated over from MW.

Re: Free Spectate?
Frees pec plus any game mode with delayed respawns is bad. m'kay. Folks will do their own ghosting then put what they found out to use once they respawn.
I personally like having team spec only. It really adds to the tension.
Turning free spec on for only a small group of folks vs everyone is also not a good practice, morale wise.
Less skilled players need to take more time and be more careful.
Any of the maps we play, that players have downloaded can be run locally on their own machines and they can walk the maps at their leisure.

Re: Free Spectate?
i agree free spec should be left off. i think there have been some relly great points made on both sides but you have to realize that when it comes down to a heated match and you have been killed your going to go look for where you got killed from plain and simple.
another thing, what about having a "lockdown" type style. monday through thursday free spec will be on and play can be a little lighter. But, at thursday at 12:00 am central the server "resets" in to lockdown mode. our lockdown mode could consist of the server being passsworded, and the password being in a text file as an attachment in the SOP's section of the forum which has to be downloaded, maybe then we could add something to the mod to make it a little different like clays/ whatever kill people, or something to make it a little more intense for the weekend of lockdown play
somthing could also be done with the amount of stickies that are up. maybe condense a few of them?? and with regards to spectate not being enable, someone could make a post in the tactics section with the map overheads?

Re: Free Spectate?
The only reason I would want free spec on is for my own entertainment after I die, which is not a good enough reason so I'll have to go with "leave it off".

Re: Free Spectate?
I would leave it off.
Although it can be quite fun to see what both teams are doing and see them walk into ambushes, if one person relays that info to the team it could kill the game. Clearly that wouldn't happen very often and may not be deliberate, but to be on the safe side I would leave it off.
I like the idea of a 'lockdown' mode. I have no problem with having free spectate on some of the time, to act as an education tool and then switching it off when some of you want to have a more competitive game.
Maybe have a vote before every session? I don't know how hard it is for the admins to switch it on / off.|TG-189th|PaintScratcher - 189th Infantry Brigade'It’s one of the characteristics of a leader that he not doubt for one moment the capacity of his men to realize whatever he’s dreaming'

Re: Free Spectate?
I was going to write something like this but you beat me to the punch. But yes thats what i would like in free spec. Not have it on all the time but have it on some of the time. If im correct switching it on and off is pretty simple, and it changes the next round.

Re: Free Spectate?
I like the idea of lock down for the weekends or whenever really. I didn't vote because there isn't an option that reflects my opinion. I enjoy both scenarios (on/off) at different times and for different reasons. On because it helps you to become a better player and it's fun to watch from an aerial point of view. Off because it makes the matches much more intense by keeping you guessing.

Re: Free Spectate?
I vote FOR having free spectate on.
FOR: Although TGers are, on average, probably a lot more patient than the average person, it's still pretty depressing to get killed early in the round, and having the ability to watch both sides alleviates a lot of the boredom. If you've got one guy left on your team, camping the bombsite, and you can't look at anything except the doorway he's staring at, that's not interesting.
AGAINST: "People can abuse it by telling alive people where people are" - I've been playing with freecam on the CoD4 servers for a year now and have never once seen it abused. I've seen the occasional TS slip-up where someone says something like "Mannn, Cap, how did you hit me from the second floor right-most window of the building overlooking the ditch that comes around behind alpha?! Nice shot!" but those slip-ups just as easily affect your own team's as the enemy, even with freecam off.
AGAINST: "People can see where I shot them from and find out my secret ninja strategy" - Finding some favourite camping spot on a map and using it over and over again doesn't seem realistic to me. Both attackers and defenders should be on their toes at all times and assume that there can be a threat in any direction.

Re: Free Spectate?
I voted no.
Experience has shown that following your own team and seeing how they work in your absence is more instructional and working a different strat without prescience (which is what you get when you see where the opposing team has deployed in earlier rounds) is more rewarding.
Besides it has gotten contentious each time it was tried.

Re: Free Spectate?
I feel it should be left off for the most part.
The only time I would consdier having it on is to check out the new maps as they are added to the rotation.
But, if you play tthem enough you'll get the layout without having to have the free spec on.
Also, as Bronco mentioned, I feel spec'ing your teammates once you are down is the way to go. You can get the lay of the maps and your teammates style of play and strategies.

Re: Free Spectate?
See i totally agree with this. I hate when there is one person left and he doesn't loook around. It makes me want to like rip my eyes out sometimes
I also barely ever see this abuse, and when it is you can tell real quickly because that person/s ALL the time will know when someone is behind them or coming around the corner.
When the other team knows where you are the next round, or a couple rounds after will make that person maybe go to another spot and get more familiar with a map.
